Well, if it's any consolation, reading this may soften the blow.
A lack of raw sharpness is a major reason why I use film for most of my "real" work. Digital is generally too sharp for the portrait work I do. Or rather, I heavily favor my Mamiya 7 for such work, primarily because of the inherent qualities of film.

Was? It still is. I use the first version of the camera and nothing else really compares for me.
I must say, though: I watched a grad student make 44x50 prints from 4x5 film last week and they look terrifically sharp. She was clearly visible as the photographer in the eyes of some of the subjects.
