Hard to believe it was less than a week ago when I took this.....on our last day we drove the coast from Monterey to LAX airport. Caught this early in the day from one of the many pullouts that made the trip quite easy, I was expecting a much tighter, narrower drive. This image seemed well suited for black and white as there wasn't much colour in the original.

fog makes it, quite nice

FWIW, I too was expecting a tighter drive out there, winding... but not too difficult.

Nice shot, Andrew. For many people, Highway 1 is the most exciting they have driven. They just haven't experienced really good roads, such as Highway 12 in Utah or Beartooth Pass in Montana/Wyoming, or several other really tight, steep and curvy roads.

Thanks for the feedback, it was great to do this route after seeing so many great images of it on FM over the years.....Stan, I agree, I've done both those roads you mentioned. We also did the drive down to Hana in Maui on this trip, it had been pouring for days - now thats a challenge. Luckily we had a huge dump truck leading us for half the journey - nothing was getting in his way!

I first drove highway 1 in 1969 on the way to the Monterey Music Festival. It was interesting as a drive, but it never really was about the road... it was the magic of what was on the left, the right, above and below.

To this day, if you know where to look, you can find waterfalls, springs, private beaches and hiking trails. And those are just things to experience without enjoying the magestic panorama of the coastline itself. The entire left coast of this continent is a gift from God I never tire of. (Sorry I can't speak to the other coastlines, I haven't had the pleasure of seeing them yet.)

FWIW - your shot captured the magic of Big Sur and harkened me back to a campsite in the redwoods where people with long hair and strange ideas about peace and love gathered and shared food and music.

Andrew, beautiful image I think this was an excellent choice for a conversion, the comp is very strong here you worked the fog and light just right and presented a fantastic view . Regards,
