Just announced: Rebel SL1, T5i and Powershot SX-280!
Canon just released three new cameras today: The Rebel SL1, the Rebel T5i and the compact Powershot SX-280.
From the specifications alone, the new Rebel T5i is very similar to its predecessor, the Rebel T4i. They both share the same 18MP sensor and similar camera features, but autofocus was improved with a high-precision dual-cross f/2.8 center point.

The new Rebel SL1 has a new sensor and features similar specs when compared to the T5i's, but in a more compact and a lighter body weighting around 175g less. It captures 1 less frames per second in AF continuous mode but both cameras share the new high-precision f/2.8 center point.

From these newly released cameras, the Powershot SX-280, is the first and only one to sport the new DIGIC 6 image processor. It will have a 20x zoom range, Wi-Fi buit-in and Full HD.

Canon Rebel T5i specifications:
  • 18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, DIGIC 5 image processor, 14-bit A/D conversion
  • 9pt AF, all cross type with a high-precision dual-cross f/2.8 center point (Borrowed from Canon 60D)
  • Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II (1,040,000 dots)
  • 5 FPS continuous shooting
  • Full HD Movie mode with Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking
  • Flash sync of 1/200 sec
  • ISO 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600)
  • Compatibility with SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, including new Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) cards.
  • Battery LP-E8
  • Weights 580g (battery, memory card included)
Canon EOS Rebel SL1 changes when comparing to the Rebel T5i
  • Newly developed 18MP APS-C sensor with 14-bit DIGIC 5 processor
  • Hybrid CMOS AF II system (with 80% frame coverage)
  • 4 fps continuous shooting (instead of 5 fps)
  • 3-inch fixed capacitive touch-screen (same as EOS M)
  • Continuous autofocus in movie mode with subject tracking
  • Creative Filters: Live View preview of image-processing controls
  • Battery LP-E12 (instead of LP-E8)
  • 25% smaller and 28% lighter: Weighs 407g (instead of 580g)

Ok it's official, T5i side-date is lamest in Canon's history, makes the 20D->30D upgrade look positively awesome. Should have just gone with the 100D announcement, at least it's size makes it worthwhile. I wonder if they'll keep the lame 1100D going, can't really see the point.

If I'm reading BH comparison on their newsletter the SL-1 shoots in jpeg only :-(. I thought this was the camera that would have been a competitor for the Panasonic GH2 or GH3.

on dpreview, it lists RAW format as well. I don't think Canon would release a JPEG only DSLR.

question though, is it a new 18mp sensor or the same old sensor dating back to the T2i?
I read on one website stating it may be a newly redesigned sensor.

Lame - why do they even bother rehashing unwanted cameras? Oh yes, the Rebel line is still selling like hotcakes.

Just read the Canon press release and it does say newly developed 18mp APS-C sensor. Be interesting to see how it performs.

New stuff...
- Digic6 CPU; could prove interesting as it floats up to the upper levels
- BSI-CMOS II APS-C Sensor; better DR and low-light/higher/cleaner ISOs
- updated 18-55 STM IS zoom; for the movie folks
- a very small DSLR for those hobbits that are mucking about

The point n shoot looks kinda interesting...
Arms crossed, waiting for the big boyz toys to be announced

Digic 6 looks interesting considering likely use in the next DSLR - 70D or 7D2 perhaps?

Might consider SL1 if I don't want to carry pro series cameras but then again I have g12 just for that purpose. Too many choices. :-)

Right on, there's no Direct Print button this time.

I think the 100D should have been the 1200D, else what's the point of having three! rebel models at once?

I like the idea behind the SL1 and this camera could sell really well. As for the T5i, this has got to be one of the least inspired upgrades

IMO the release of the 100D means Canon's heart is not really in mirrorless. I think they should have released an EOS-M2 with much better AF, integrated EVF, and 3-4 new lenses. They probably can't get CDAF working very well and there's no point with an EOS-M2.

Doesn't matter. Canon's mirrorless would always be gimped and held back, since they are so afraid of stepping on their own toes.

Next year we'll all be shooting with the full frame NEX anyway. Fuji and even Samsung are also looking into full frame mirrorless.
