Sauntered into the local camera store yesterday and spotted a slightly rare lens in the Used Nikon case: A Nikkor Reflex 500mm f/8N.

After sleeping on it last night, I went back this morning and picked "Big Daddy" up.

Came with the hood, a Tiffen 82mm Haze filter, cap and L39C rear filter.

It looks like a beast. Any sample pics?

Not really all that big.

No sample pix yet, unless you want to be bored with a test shot of my shed.

Check for de-silveration (is that a word?) of the mirrors. Seems to be somewhat of a common issue with these bad boys.

Looking forward to seeing your sample shots!

I've often thought about getting one of those as an inexpensive and light-weight way of getting some reach.

I've used one of these before....cool lens, but not something I'd see myself using often.

i found this version to be better at close-ups, and subjects no further than 200 feet. it renders very good detail at these distances ... but watch out for vignetting. the older Nikkor-C version is even brighter, and thus doesn't vignette as much. however it really shines when shooting targets beyond 200 feet and up to to infinity. these, along with the 1000mm f11 are really fun lenses.

if you've never used CAT's before, spend some time learning how to tame the bokeh so it complements your subjects and stays fun to use.

I haven't used mine much lately but it's a great (and under appreciated) lens. Here are a few samples (all shot hand held with either a D3 or D3s):

nice photo set! I like the dipping in the sea shot -- shows the circle patterns produced by this lens.

I want to throw one on a V1 for some crazy reach!

Did a quick search on ebay for 500mm Nikon and check out the related searches:

"Related searches for 500mm nikon : nikon 500mm f4 sex toys nikon 800mm"

Lol. Brings a new meaning to "big daddy". What are people doing with these long lenses that I don't know about?

Good luck, 480sparky, with your new lens. The Nikon 500mm mirror seems to be much better than the Yashica I tried some years ago.

You seem to master it. Great shots alltogether.

The Reflex-Nikkor 1000/11 Ai is actually a bit sharper than the 500 and it's the real Big Daddy. Here are a couple of 1000/11 shots:

Good to see some images Don. We've missed you at the MF thread.

I also like this lens and it grows on one with use.

Questar made one as well,, very hard to locate but an astounding lens in the correct hands,,

donut bokeh is tough to handle so your background is vital,,

they can be an enjoyable lens,,

Wow, that brings back memories! I remember being rather disappointed with it in about 1980. My expectations were obviously unrealistic.
