i found this version to be better at close-ups, and subjects no further than 200 feet. it renders very good detail at these distances ... but watch out for vignetting. the older Nikkor-C version is even brighter, and thus doesn't vignette as much. however it really shines when shooting targets beyond 200 feet and up to to infinity. these, along with the 1000mm f11 are really fun lenses.
if you've never used CAT's before, spend some time learning how to tame the bokeh so it complements your subjects and stays fun to use.
