A few months ago, I went to downtown Los Angeles to take photos of homeless people with a friend who is an outstanding portrait photographer. I learned a lot from him and his techniques. Here is Colman, wheelchair bound but with spirit. shot with a Canon 5D MK II, 24-105 lens

The first picture is nice, but I'm curious why you decided to use a flash for street photography on a day (based on the wheelchair pic) that could have possibly gone without a flash?

I like the first shot, but I agree with Ron that you probably didn't need a flash for the second (and the flash shadow is ugly)

I think the second shot would look better if you got down to his level rather than shooting from above.

On the first photo, I am more drawn to focus on his beard than his eyes. Was this intentional? Also, what's up with the glow around his head?
