p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · New to me 1DIII

Just opened the box on a 1DIII.
That thing is a beast compared to my 60D.
The DSLR market is now reachable for us amateur/enthusiasts to start toting around these revered pro bodies.
I hope I can do it justice.
But I must say, my knowledge is so very limited. I look at the photos on here and other sites and they look amazing compared to my noisy, OOF, poorly colored captures. Even shots from other 60D's are miles ahead of mine.
I have a lot of learning to do.
The 1DIII will force me to push it as there is no Auto-Dum-Dum Mode available. I have decent glass in the 70-200 2.8II so that should help.
I shoot a lot of hockey for fun, this body promises to up my keeper count as long as I can figure out how to ride and tame it.

Have lots of fun. Its one of the finer cameras. There was a long thread here and on the sports forum on settings to use etc. back in 2010/2011, please search for it.
There is a good article on the web on what the settings are and how to tweak them for sports.

Here's a quick reference for you:

It helped me when I first got my 1D3. Enjoy.

Thanks for the input guys.
One thing that really surprised me for some reason was the 'big honking battery charger'.
After being accustomed to the compact charger and battery the 60D has, that charger is a monster.

The 1DIII was my first DLSR and there was/is quite a learning curve with it. What seems like a gonzillion settings will make more sense the more you use it. The battery charger/battery is one of the best features because I never shut mine off because the battery is so strong. Read everything you can find then keep shooting it till you drop.

I just received my 1DIII this past Saturday and I am looking forward to shooting this weekend until the battery is drained....and from what I have heard about the battery life that may take all weekend. I am glad to see all the replies and links for adjusting the settings, I primarily shoot sports and these links should be very helpful.

When I went from a gripped 50D to a 1D Mark IV, I was astonished at the huge difference... the 1D's are beasts in every way! Enjoy it!

Great info I will have to spend some time with this. Just picked up a nice 1D3 this week.
Once I get it figured I can see me needing better lenses soon though.

Yes I know a super tele would be nice. Can't afford it right now and my local camera store isn't helping things by wanting me to blow the vacation budget.

Hmmm.tried setting up some C. Fn's from a birder on another site to see if I could get some sharper images.

These are not bad, but pretty noisy. Perhaps too high of ISO.

I'm actually getting a little frustrated as my images still do not come close to most I've seen on here.

It's def. not the camera. I just have to continue testing and learning it.

This 1DIII has a 577xxx serial number.

1DIII, 70-200w/1.4x, f/10, Iso1000, 250mm, 1/1600sec.
