One more thing was not to start a BH bashing post but to find out two things from the fellow photographers here 1) was I the only one to check these three sources before buying gear and 2) find out if there were better places to check besides these three.

Thank you. This is very gratifying and much appreciated. BTW you should have an email from us confirming the order's been shipped with the necessary package tracking info by now.

I've been reading these comments with great interest. Here is my $.02 (+ tax on Amazon).

1. B&H: Whatever I've ordered from B&H and selected free shipping has taken up to two days to be shipped. Yes, it is stated in the fine print that choosing the free shipping option can (and usually does) result in extended processing and shipping times. In other words, you're on their clock, they're not on yours, if they are paying the shipping.

In the case of a recent order, I checked shipping for a camera that I'd ordered (with free shipping) two days prior, and the status reflected that the order had been "sent to the warehouse". I jumped on the "chat" function to inquire as to why the item hadn't yet shipped, and the chat person said it would ship that day (What a coincidence - too bad I didn't get on chat the day I placed the order!). Sure enough, within minutes, here came an e-mail that the item had shipped. It took some complaining to get the desired result. It shouldn't have.

That said, B&H usually does have a great selection, their site is well-organized, we in Texas don't have to pay sales tax, and their prices are competitive. As well, they offer at least a 2% reward on most if not all items.

2. Amazon: After years of happily paying no sales tax and getting speedy free shipping at Amazon, my ordering of costly items sold by Amazon has come to a screeching halt. Texas residents now must pay sales tax on items sold by Amazon (NOTE: Items sold by another vendor but FULFILLED by Amazon incur no sales tax). If it's a small amount and I need something quickly, I'll order from Amazon.

Also, for me their site is not well-organized, and their comment section can be less than a credible source for legitimate feedback on true experiences with products. They do offer rewards, but that amount is usually not enough to offset the sales tax.

3. ADORAMA: Whether you select free shipping or not, your item is shipped that day as long as you order by a certain time, which is specified on the front page of the site. And, if you ordered during the recent Passover closing period, they graciously assured that they would ship promptly on the day after the holiday concluded, and do so with two-day shipping at NO CHARGE. I know this because I placed an order during that period, precisely because of that assurance. Lo and behold, I received a shipping notice the day I expected to, and the item was indeed shipped via two-day air, which I hadn't selected. I don't believe B&H offered such a courtesy.

I also don't pay sales tax for items ordered from Adorama, though their selection doesn't seem to be as broad as that of B&H. But, their site is well-organized which I like. There is a scarcity of reviews vs. B&H, and it does seem that they don't offer rewards as liberally as B&H does. But, their emphasis on customer service is the magnet that draws me back there. When it came down to where I was going to buy my new Nikon 500mm f/4, Adorama got the nod.

I've also had excellent experiences ordering from Roberts Camera. They had stock when others didn't, and their shipping was lightning fast.

Thank you. I'm grateful for your business, your kind words and your frank assessment of your experience here. Feedback like this helps us focus our energies so we know where we should consider improvements.

I found recent orders from you and the most recent was placed on a March Monday after 4:00pm EDT. You have two customer accounts here because at different times you ordered using different billing addresses and this order was more than 2x the $$ of any previous order under this particular account. It was routed through Verification whose purpose is to deter credit card fraud, identity theft and other sorts of piracy. The order was shipped Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours after we received it.

It did not take any complaining to get the desired result. The result you received was not altered by your contacting us.

The previous order was placed on a February Tuesday and shipped the next day. Everyone here is aware, I am sure, that we offer a range of shipping options from free and not so speedy to overnight rush, not free and very rapid. We don't care which you choose as long as you choose whichever is appropriate for each particular order and you get the service you're paying for and deserve. We try to ship all orders, including those with free shipping as speedily and efficiently as we can but I think it's reasonable that an order which was submitted with rush shipping (for which the customer pays extra) gets priority handling. YMMV.

Henry,
Just before passover I had a Nikon 85/1.4g lens in my cart, but could not proceed due to the holiday (which was off about 250 or 300 due the Nikon sale that ended Mar 30). Right back when BH opened for business the price went back to the original price.
So I lost out 10 days of the Nikon sale period. I am ok with you not shipping during the holidays, but causing customers to lose out on sale prices is an invitation to take my business elsewhere.

I sympathize entirely and cannot disagree with your dissatisfaction, which I regret. I do know our site was accepting orders during part of the Passover hiatus. We closed 3/25 and accepted orders until sundown that day. We accepted orders 3/28 all day and 3/29 until sundown. There should have been no impediment to submitting an order at those times.

Mr. Posner:

I privately e-mailed a reply to your comments to my post. I received an auto-response stating that your offices would be closed, and would re-open April 3, after which time you would reply. You need to turn off your e-mail auto-responder.

Thanks.

Sir:

No embarrassment intended whatsoever; you are clearly on the job, attending punctually to posts on FM, so it occurred to me that this would be a logical place to inform you that people attempting to e-mail you were receiving that message in error.

Thanks again -

I appreciate it. I was so proud I remembered to remove the "We'll be closed..." note from my signature but I forgot all about the out-of-office notice. I HATE Outlook and it's having its revenge because I pine unrequitedly for Eudora. :-)

Henry the opening and closing dates are too hard to follow. Why not simply accept web orders during shutdown, and fill them when you reopen. This way you are not actually doing "work" during the holidays. The computers run, but so do lights, backups etc.

I'm not an expert on this so bear with me. Passover is divided into "major" days requiring Sabbath-like observance and intermediate days where observance requirements are more relaxed. The "major" days are the first two and last two. This year Sabbath itself fell among the "intermediate" days. Sabbath observance (first two and last two days plus Friday evening and Saturday) includes a no-commerce rule. Since some orders placed on our site include being charged immediately we disable online ordering at those times. To accommodate customers who want to order when commerce is permitted (made more important this year by the Nikon USA instant savings opportunity) we open order entry when permitted to do so.

We may not "simply accept web orders during shutdown," simple as it may seem on the surface.

I thought it might be helpful to have a flowchart to assist in navigating through the complex process. I'm putting this in the public domain. Feel free to save it for future reference while browsing the B&H web site.

There are some pretty unreasonable people on here I'm learning. Expecting to get a perfect copy and when they get a very good copy withing standards they cry about it, people who can't read about Passover observance and blame it on the company for their own mistake, and now someone who asked for a price match, when more than 30 days after purchasing and using a lens the price dropped online. Sorry people, the world does not revolve around you.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the concept of "customer service" where the service/product providing vendor goes out of their way to satisfy their loyal customers. It was not just about the price match $ but the way I was dismissed by the online rep that disgusted me. All the fan boys need to remember the multitude of choices available to customers looking to spend money.
Actually, when you grow up, Daboyle, you will learn that as far as a business is concerned, the world DOES revolve around their customers! Now, isn't it time for your shift at B&H to begin?

I am very sorry if you felt our employee's demeanor or attitude was lacking in any way. If it is still available I will ask his manager to retrieve our recording of your conversation to see if he was in fact less than properly professional and polite.

The purchase in question was made during December and your request we match a lower price was made during February. We honor price changes during a product's return policy time period but more importantly the lower price you saw during February was because Nikon USA had initiated an "instant savings" rebate program. During a program like this customers pay a lower price and the US distributor (Nikon USA in this instance) reimburses the retailer for most or all of the "instant savings" amount. Because you purchased before this "instant savings" program went into effect Nikon USA would not have reimbursed us and honoring the lower price would have represented an unacceptable loss to us. And since Nikon USA now has "unilateral pricing" on many products doing so might well have put us in violation of our authorized retailer contract with them. Violating the "unilateral pricing" provision can result is severe penalties.

Dan,

I hope you don't mind that I modified your flow chart. I think a feedback loop is required.

I have to update my post....Henry saved the day in my opinion for B&H. It's easy to provide excellent service when everything goes well, but when there's a problem you learn how good a company's service really is.

I had a problem with an order I placed that would have been easy for B&H to dismiss and move on, but Henry took the time to email me and fix the problem.

I am very impressed with the customer service at B & H and will happily shop there in the future.
