I think both are solid shots. Well composed and nice moments.
In the first, making some adjustments in the B&W conversion might be able to reduce the appearance of the splotches on the face.
In the second, if there is a weakness I think it is the lighting and to some extent possibly the orientation of the subjects. There are several elements and they all receive roughly the same attention. Rotating the subjects more towards the light might have helped light up the faces a bit more and it might have taken some light off of Mom's shoulder and back. Using a flag or even having someone block part of the light falling on her back might have helped, too. I think you might be able to drop the saturation a tiny bit and maybe lift the black point to boost the high-key feel.
