A geomagnetic storm moderate level (G2), made for some more amazing and different looking auroras over Fairbanks early in the morning on March 17th. These photos all have the "Big Dipper" in the image.

Dave,
These are all great. The 3rd one has "Star Trek" feel to it!
Can I ask where/near Fairbanks you took these?
I will be up there by the 30th (driving the Alcan) and am interested in good locations.

I like the dipper - adds a good sense of scale.

Hi Dan,

These were taken just past Cleary Summit on the Steese Hwy. There are several pull-outs as you go down the road into the valley. It takes 20 to 30 minutes to drive there from Fairbanks.

There's a large parking area at Cleary Summit too. However, I wouldn't advise trying to photograph from there due to car traffic (headlights) entering and exiting the parking lot.

Other popular spots are Ester Dome and Murphy Dome.
