Well how can you not love the welcoming call outs of the Red Wing Blackbirds this time of the year as they begin to welcome back Spring

They are really fun to photograph and make for a good challenge on rendering details in blacks and holding the brilliant red and yellow wing bands in saturation check! So they also make for good post processing practices too.

I invite you to share yours as you get them, maybe post up to three at a time and add more as you get ones that better up the originals or offer something unique in pose or habit to share

Try some with flash too, can be rewarding in details

Just watch out for the flash eyes though.
This will be a good thread to show how many different ways there are to render the blacks, dark, more even, contrasty or relaxed and how the light they are in changes the results we get.

I'll start with a few from this morning, with flash and two without, there was not much light today to enjoy but I wanted to practice on them some more

So round up your RWBB shots and put them here!

Great idea Karl and some smoking shots, I can see why you started this thread

I posted this one a week or two ago. Not quite as good as y'alls but, hey, I'm learning and feel like I'm getting the hang of it. I have figured out that you have to get closer and you must avoid the urge to over crop.

Canon EOS Rebel T4i/Tamron SP70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD
300mm 1/1000 f/6.3 ISO 500. Handheld.

I learned on this one that I should use a faster shutter speed/higher ISO. That probably would have produced a sharper image.

You guys are knocking them out of the park. Great work Karl, and thanx for starting this. I will see if I can dig out a few to post. Funny thing is that I was off this weekend, and I wanted to go to my favorite RWBB spot sat, but the weather changed my mind ~ Ron

Well, here are two from last year. I know I clipped the wings in the first shot, but I like the way the stuff is falling.

This is one I shot a couple summers ago. Taken from a kayak with a T1i /75 - 300mm combo. I won't be shooting any of these in the near future. Still winter up this way.

Hi Karl,
It has been awhile since my last post, been too busy and maybe a touch of laziness...The elusive RWBB, I only have a few because they are no ware near ware I live. First shot is in heavy cloudy overcast day, second shot is a very heavy crop, too small a lens for this outing.
