I have a D300 and shoot a lot of BIF and have used a few different settings. I started using 3D focus tracking with CF but have wondered what others have found that has worked well for them. Thanks.

As David pointed out A3 set to 9 pts is what a lot of folks seem to use around here.

1)Autofocus C with focus release

2 )Matrix metering with exposure compensation based on the subject and back ground.using spot metering is very iffy because at any given moment while panning the spot can move off the subject and your exposure goes to hell if there is a difference between the 2

3) 9 point focus.big enough to keep it on the subject and not move off and focus on the background
