Going more for the subtle mood, Cape Kiwanda cooperated pretty well this last morning of a 6 day-er (last spring).

Great light...but composition wise, I don't really like the focus to be bang right in the middle of the image. I know this works for some subjects, but I don't feel it works here.

I had the opposite reaction to the composition. The simplicity surrounding the stack allows it to work. The light is very nice.

Nice image!

perhaps a square crop, though I don't mind the composition, on either side there are no other stacks so you'd have an image full of horizon/ocean/sky/clouds & or fog.

I can see why it may not work for some. On this one I'm sticking to it, cause I like it. Yet, having said that, I am sure a square, or a 16:9 or even an off center would work too. I may very well try those as alternative versions. I do sincerely appreciate the feedback as always. It helps me peer into how people feel about an image which is very valuable and helps me make decisions about the future approach to the print.

Hey Mark,

If you like it, that's good and probably most important. For me, this one doesn't really work. What appears as limited DOF along with that low cloud in front, to me renders this like it's a miniature. I see that others seem to like it, but for me, while it's certainly interesting how that low layer of clouds is in the shot, in the end, it visually bugs my eyes a bit...

Mark, as a suggestion, I would try a crop at about the edge of the large dark area in the foreground. That dark area really does not add anything to the image ( at least not for me ) and that would move the stacks away from center somewhat, at least in the vertical direction.

Perfect use of a dead center comp Mark.

It is interesting how we all see things so differently. Thanks everyone for the feedback and great suggestions.

I did shoot this many different ways (which is my practice). Thirds in all four sectors, then the same vertically, and some other ways. But of those, and playing with several crop options in raw, I just liked this one best for whatever reason. I'm sure people will be divided over a centered crop and I think there are several good options (that people have suggested here). I'll try them for the print. Thanks.
