p.1 #1 · Sigma 85 as good as the 35?

I have the Sigma 35 on my D600 and couldn't be more impressed. How is the Sigma 85 vs the 35? I would be "upgrading" from the 85 1.8G.

The sigma 85 is an amazing lens. I wouldn't put it on par with the 35 though. The Sigma 35 blew me away, the Sigma 85 is pretty much what I expected. It's a great piece of glass, and at the price, it's worth it IMO.

I guess the question is why the need to upgrade from Nikon 1.8G to Sigma? I actually started with the Sigma 85 but replaced with the Nikon 1.8G when Nikon came out with the rebate then save some $$$. They are both sharp but the Sigma's bokeh is cremier. On the other hand, I find the Nikon 1.8G focus faster to me. No regrets for me thus far though.

+1 to Ben... I honestly found the Sigma 85 1.4 one of the fastest lenses to focus and very accurate even in low light. It's sharp wide open and very very sharp at f/2. Bokeh is so smooth and creamy. However, as Ben mentioned the 35 is a freak of nature in wide open sharpness and the 85 isn't... Both make a killer combo IMO

The Nikon 1.8g is a great little lens at a low price. Its really tough to beat value wise. The sigma is equally as good imho. It focuses faster but is quite a bit larger and heavier. Its a draw. I wouldnt switch if i already had either lens.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Looks like I'll wait for the updated art version from Sigma

The sigma 35 is significantly ahead of other 35s while the 85 is pretty much on par with nikons. Not really much of an upgrade unless 2/3rds of a stop is an upgrade for how you use it.

He already has the amazing Nikon 85 1.8G, there's no sharper 85 than that one! Bokeh is very good, but yes, the Siggy's is a bit (not very noticable I find) smoother.

I prefer the bokeh of the Sigma and the colors to the 85 1.8 G. It's just so... dreamy. in fact I'm selling my 85 1.8 G to get the Sigma again... .

Save your money and go with the Nikkor 85 f/1.8g.

It is ok. I have some bokeh samples in my article on bokeh:
http://jtra.cz/stuff/essays/bokeh/
It has smooth bokeh at closer focus distances, and slightly edgy at longer focus distances.

But compared to 85/1.8G, it is twice the weight.
I mostly use mine at f/2 to f/3.5, as there is quite difference in sharpness and purple fringing between wide open and f/2 (at least on 12MP DX body). So I thought about trading it for 85/1.8G especially when I will switch to full frame. Corners are better on 1.8G.

See this comparison:

Thanks all. I'm going to stick with the 85 1.8G that I already have.

I have all three lenses mentioned, and all are fantastic. I keep meaning to sell one of the 85s, but keep wavering if I prefer the light weight of the 1.8G or the larger aperture of the Sigma.

All I have to say is, HOLY SHIT at that high res! The detail of the camera combined with the lens is remarkable.

The 85 is a half step down on image quality and a whole step down on build quality, but still a really excellent lens. As for comparing to the 85/1.8G, I still have both because I prefer the IQ of the Sigma but prefer the light weight of the 1.8G, just can't decide.

I was a bit disappointed by the blue and green boke fringes of the Nikon G even stopped down. I wonder if the Sigma is better here. Maybe somebody could comment on that?
