So you prefer a 95% viewfinder to a 100% viewfinder?

I don't have either but I think it is an interesting question. Form reading the posts on this thread, I can draw one conclusion so far. Of the responders who have actually OWNED both, they prefer the D600.

If you are buying in addition to the D700 I'd ask "why?" If you want to sell the D700 to go with the D600 I'd say do it. I tried the full frame combo of D800e & D600 which was not useful to me, so now I'm trying D800e and D7100 when it arrives. Will see. I miss my D700 but it's more for sentimental reasons I think. In general, the D600 is better in every way (with the possible exception of the D7000 body versus D800 body). It's just what you like. Kind of like driving last years model car versus buying this years...

The problem with the survey cited above is that you don't know when cameras were purchased by respondents, if Nikon has addressed the dust issue in later manufacturing by possibly replacing something. I just sold one that had minimal dust issues during the time I owned it.

Maybe I'm not in the majority, but I honestly no longer miss my D700. Of course, I guess I'm also in a different boat because my D600 is my 2nd-body and/or backup to a D3S, the role the D700 used to fill.

I kept both for a long period of time to make sure of my decision, but since parting with the D700 I haven't looked back. The D600 was far better in the areas where I wanted it to be... which was a lot more to do with image quality, and a "different" image-making option than what I had (more resolution, smaller body and weight, etc). The D600 was improved to a large extent in ways I wanted it to be.

Granted, if this was to be my primary body, I'd place a lot more emphasis on build and strength, and the D700 is definitely superior in this way.

I also want to ask the previous poster who said you have to do more menu-diving on the D600 than the D700... I really question if they've used it. The D600 has basically every option you have on the D700 externally, plus adds more controls, such as tweaking the autofocus system, that you had to dive into menus on the D700 for. The D600 does not bury controls IMHO. They're just DIFFERENT.

I shot the D700 for 2-3 years, and loved it -- but I'm glad I moved to the D600.

For me, the much quieter operation and improved dynamic range are the biggest things -- it's really a lot better for me as a low-light event camera. Lighter weight, video, and dual card slots are also very nice to have.

I have had zero dust/oil problems, and I'm perfectly happy with the AF.

I agree, DJ. Come to think of it, I actually did more fumbling with my D700 than I did on the D600. Switching from landscape settings to a regular shooting settings was a pain on the D700. I had to go through several menus and custom banks to do it. The D600 made my life easier with the U1/U2 dial. I wish every Nikon had this feature!

I went from D700 to D600 but via brief flings with D800, D3x....I've never liked the Nikon ergo but I do like the files which is more important to me. Do not mis the D700, I bought into D600 early and suffer with the oil spots, it sucks worse than my old 5D dust ever did and given the choice again I'd not buy again...the D800 refurb is so close in price.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I have received several PMs with good advice there as well. A question that seems to come up is "why" a D600? Someone stated perhaps NAS - which very well could be.

Now remember, I shot with a 1Ds (my first ever FF camera) from 2010 to May 2012. From May until October, I shot with a Nikon F5, and then picked up a D700. So all this "new" technology is new to me. Previously I had never had a camera that would shoot high ISO. The 1Ds was good to about 400.

Live View is new to me, and I can't figure out how to work it with my Samyang lens, lol. Also, which may not be a huge deal right away, is that I have never had more than 12MP on a camera. As I start to print larger, this may come into play.

Dynamic range is probably the #1 reason I would go with the D600. While the D700 is great, I really do not know how much better the 600 is, until I use one - as I have no first hand experience with working RAW files. Someone let me know that D600 files do not work with CS5 and below...

I may very well shoot with the 700 for the time being, and wait until fall to do something. I am in no hurry at this point, and I suspect the D600 will be worth less than the D700 by the time I decide to upgrade...

I know that people gripe about the D600, when compared to the D700. Things like flash sync speed, build quality and feel always seem to come up. Also, I read about how people have sold their D700 to get a D600 (don't need 36 MP), only to regret their decisions - especially with the oil/dust spots.

Who honestly doesn't regret their decisions? I have a D700 with 12K clicks and looks mint, and I am happy with the camera - however, the D600 looks nice. Personally, I haven't really messed around with the D600 before, so I can't draw

I don't see the point in spending the money on a D600 if you say you're happy with the D700. Sounds like you just have a case of NAS.

I say keep your money for now and keep shooting the D700.

The DR and increased IQ has me intrigued... Plus SD cards are WAAAAAAY cheaper than CF cards.
I will be able to use one tomorrow I think..

This is a valid point, plus the fact that you don't have to remember to bring along a CF adapter if you want the client to be able to view the images right away on a laptop.

(Yes, I know, it's not smart to show most clients ALL the images, only the best from the shoot, but some clients are intelligent enough to do this with).

I have had a d700 for about 3 years and bought the d600 kit when it went down to $1996 for the holidays. I thought I would hang onto the d700 just in case the d600 didn't work out for me. Well, I'm just about ready to put my d700 up for sale - I still love the camera, but for my uses the d600 is better. I mainly shoot landscapes, mostly with manual focus. I have had no dust issues.

Biggest problem for me with the d600 is the lack of an eyepiece shutter for long exposures in daylight. I'm hoping the aftermarket will address that soon.

how long an exposure during daylight? I haven't had that problem before, even when using my 1Ds. I am assuming you have a 10 stop filter?

Any exposure from a few seconds or longer can ruin an image, if it's shot in daylight and your eye is not looking through the eyepiece. The eyepiece needs to be shuttered.

I went from the D700 to the 600 with no regrets. I previously had a D90 as a backup and now the 7000 so the ergonomics were already similar. I have small hands so that wasn't an issue for me and the cards and batteries being the same I sold the 700 and kept the 7000 a my backup/vacation camera.

Had the dirty spots but a quick cleaning I'm more than happy with the switch.

I'm a big fan of the ergonomics of the D700. Would love the larger dr and mp of a 600, but when I got a hands on I was surprised at how I just really wasn't into the build of it. I still have yet to come across a D800 to try out, but I suspect that it will be more up my alley.

I can't wait until the days when we can swap out parts of the camera RED style. I just want to put the D600 sensor in my D700 and keep the D700 focusing system and body. Would be happy as a clam for that!
