p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Geared Head w/ Arca Swiss Plate Solution???

So, I'm looking for a geared head exactly like the Manfrotto 410 but with an Arca Swiss style plate so I can use a RRS L Plate. Any suggestions? My research isn't showing anything.

thanx in advance,

Joe

You can put a QR clamp on it like this.

Right. That option eluded me. I even have a Bogen/Manfrotto ball head with an Arca Swiss plate system. Duh.

Yep, it's easy. I also use the Manfrotto 410, with an RRS B2-Pro dual mount clamp. The RRS clamp is firmly attached to the RC4 plate that's normally used with the 410 head, as shown in the last photo.

I bought my clamp on ebay for about £20. It is not as fancy like RRS, but works fine.

Search arca swiss clamp on ebay.

Sorry to be so thick but, the RRS clamp is simply attached to the Manfrotto plate just as your camera would be attached to the Manfrotto plate?

That's what it looks like.

Yes. You can use standard 1/4" camera thread to connect the clamp to the QR base.

Yes. Crank down hard on the 3/8" screw/bolt that goes through the RC4 plate and up into the centre, threaded hole in the RRS B2-Pro dual mount clamp. The clamp also has 1/4" threaded holes. Mine's been solid for years, and I use some pretty heavy and off-balance stuff on it. Knock on wood, of course...

The Hejnar option looks like a pretty bombproof solution. That's what I would proably buy, if I was doing it today. Of course, the item in the link is only for the plate that replaces the RC4 plate, and it doesn't include the A-S clamp that you'll also need.

The Manfrotto L-bracket looks like it's for the Manfrotto RC2 clamp system, which is a step in the wrong direction. OTOH, for RC2 users, it would be a big step ahead of the 341 Junior Elbow bracket. I converted my camera and lens support to Arca-Swiss clamps and plates years ago, and now use the RC2 and RC4 systems for lighting and etc.

I have the Manfrotto 405 geared head and purchased an adapter plate from Hejnar Photo.

http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/

The Hejnar adapter plate replaces the Manfrotto plate. Hejnar also sells AS clamps that fit on there adapter plates, but other AS clamps will also fit. The plate and clamp are indeed bombproof.

+1 on the Hejnar Photo kit. I also have it for my Manfrotto 405. Works like a charm, very secure.

I use a Hejnar Photo clamp machined to fit the strange interface on Manfrotto heads and it works great. Fits like OEM. Reasonable price, fast service and precise machine work. And he'll do custom machine work if you have a really strange head you want to adapt to Arca.

I ordered one early last week, after I tried to replace my RRS B2-Pro dual mount clamp with a RRS B2 LR II lever clamp. The lever clamp dosn't have a threaded mounting hole to receive a bolt from below, it needs one that goes down through the clamp's unthreaded hole into a threaded plate, just like the Hejnar kit.

But RRS DOES make a lever clamp you can bolt on from the below. I have one attached to a 405 and it works great. Another friend of mine simply had the top surface of his 410 and 405 (sans the Manfrotto QR) machined flat and then bolted his RRS lever clamps to that.

Sure, but I don't have a spare one hanging around.

Jim,

Can I ask you how many screws you used to mount your RRS B2 LR II to the Hejnar plate? 1 or 3?

I'm looking at this combo so that I can use a RRS L-plate with my 1DX on the Manfrotto 405 geared head.

Kind regards,

Douglas
