I find it quite educational to see how other people process my images, so i think we should make a thread out of it.

my idea how it should work:

  • someone provides a raw file, info about lens and f-stop is welcome
  • now anyone can play with it and show us his/her results, and tells us what he/she did. a screenshot showing raw-converter settings would be nice
  • i would suggest a image width of 1280px
  • cropping allowed!
  • after some time someone provides another picture

    I start with this image

How it looks without any PP (besides resizing):

    Cheers!
    Phillip

Cool idea. Look forward to seeing the results but maybe a more interesting image would help.

The link is to the raw file. If you can't open it it may be a problem with your raw converter not identifying the image properly?

I'm with ct8282 meaning I would be more interested in a more colourful image, or one taken under more challenging circumstances, or... The image provided seem to be very green. Maybe it is very useful for demonstrating different sharpening techniques. Maybe next time Phillip!

i choose that image because it has many shades of green, but you can have something more dramatic

OK Phillip, I went over the top with it playing around but here it is as a contrast to the raw version you showed above:
    http://photos.imageevent.com/jonas_b/fotoforum2012mixed/fmaltgear2012/phillip_mountain_DSC00501.jpg

I hope we get more contributions. I have increased saturation, added some light and local contrast and then the poor image had to take some crude sharpening on top of that.
    Cheers,
    Jonas

Here's my try at the 'Nebelwald' forest scene:
    http://praetoriusphoto.images.s3.amazonaws.com/fmforums/2013/0310_nebelwald.jpg

    Changes:
    - cloned out blurry hanging vine upper left
    - adjusted color: cooler overall tones for cold, blue-ish haze; separated green tones towards more red or more blue for increased chromatic variety
    - dodge & burn to better separate "layers" in image; darkened lower-left corner, brightened right-front pine tree; goal is to create eye-leading diagonal brighter band from upper-mid-left sky to lower-right region

And here's my attempt on the mountains, as a B&W rendering:
    http://praetoriusphoto.images.s3.amazonaws.com/fmforums/2013/0310_dsc00501_1280.jpg

    - exposure boost to cover full output range
    - channel-mixer B&W conversion simulating a red-orange filter
    - "S-curve" curves adjustment, specifically aiming to boost contrast in the shadowed mid-tones
    - added some vignetting

    My version :

    http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-SIqKJ4fpDHM/UTz4Mu9Q98I/AAAAAAAADHE/Aw4oIKvANPA/s1197/Nebelwald.jpg

    1. DNG conversion (my LR doesn't support this RAW file)
    2. Load to LR3, slight adjustments to shadow and hightlight. All sharpening and other detail enhancements off.
    3. In PS, very light channel mix to increase color contrast (my fake velvia action, dialed down to 20% - use it in lieu of contrast settings)
    4. Cloned out the out of focus branch on the left using the healing brush
    5. Burned a few areas on extreme right to balance out the darker tree. It was either that or crop, but I thought the image would diminish with more cropping.
    6. Slight S-curve (mostly to brighten up the midtones).
    7. Image resize to 1280 using standard bicubic.
    8. Finally smart sharpen at very low setting (20% at 0.4px).

    Extra sharpening in ACR
    Cropped 2.35:1
    B&W
    Increased contrast via curves
    Add grain
I see now it should have been straightened, but I'm to lazy to redo.

I was thinking of doing a thread like this, but didn't really know how I wanted to set the rules etc...
Since were getting a look at other peeps raws, info about the lens would be nice.

    Lightroom

    Contrast up a little
    Clarity up a bit
    Sat a wee bit
    Warmed it up a smidgen

Export to PS for sharpening action and resize I found on the internet
Some minor sliding in a levels layer

I was going to post a LR screen shoot, but I lost the original (or, rather, can't find it).

Nice image. Here's my take - CS6, very slight GND for the sky, saturation of the green channel +100 plus a little more overall saturation, raw sharpening (amount=34, radius=1, masking=10) and USM for micro-contrast (amount=46%, radius=30).

Much harder to work with "new" camera files, specially since Apple Aperture didn't support Nex-6 files. Had to process photos with Raw Photo Processor (RPP). I didn't do any cropping or image modifications except sensor dust removal in 2nd one - just concentrated to colours - since I haven't been Tenerife didn't have reference what how the colors, for example pine needles, look like there.

    1. create 16-bit TIFF with RPP
    2. with ImageMagick to resize 1280 wide using Lanczos interpolation
    3. in PhotoShop convert to gamma 1 colorspace
    4. in PhotoShop USM 0.2px, 500% (if somebody figures out how to do exactly this in ImageMagick please let me know, in my normal script this is only part what is done outside ImageMagick for my 5DmkII files)
    5. in PhotoShop convert to sRGB and change mode to 8-bit
    6. in PhotoShop save to JPG
    (7. remove embedded thumbnail and some non-needed header stuff, which is 50-200kb, from JPG with CocoThumbX)

Very hard image to work with - extreme underexposure and noise made it really hard to extract correct colour and detail.
    1. create 5pcs 16-bit TIFFs with RPP (exposure -1, 0, +1, +2, +3 EV)
    2. with PhotoMatix Pro to create HDR, save to 16-bitt TIFF
    3. in PhotoShop adjust levels and removed dust from sensor
    4. with ImageMagick to resize 1280 wide using Lanczos interpolation
    5. in PhotoShop convert to gamma 1 colorspace
    6. in PhotoShop USM 0.2px, 500% (if somebody figures out how to do exactly this in ImageMagick please let me know, in my normal script this is only part what is done outside ImageMagick for my 5DmkII files)
    7. in PhotoShop convert to sRGB and change mode to 8-bit
    8. in PhotoShop save to JPG
    (9. remove embedded thumbnail and some non-needed header stuff, which is 50-200kb, from JPG with CocoThumbX)

I tried hard not to look at any other interpretation but the original images you posted. Here's the forest scene:

Crop to avoid the dark shape in the upper left; adjusted sharpening; pulled up the shadow area on the right a little, added some contrast, applied a kodachrome-ish tone I often find myself reaching for.

Mostly what I worked on was wanting to preserve what I saw as three diagonal areas of progressively lighter / more foggy (or flared) areas of green receding in the distance on the left. I used the adjustment brush in LR4 to adjust highlight and shadow values accordingly. Probably went a little heavy handed with it. The shadow area with the tree branches nearby in the foreground bother me, I find myself wishing they were not present.

I just had to deal with this for this thread: get Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.04 from Apple, and Aperture will work with the file.

Hmmm, it works now - I did upgrade, but I already had Phillip's image in library, now after reimporting works. Nice, for 10 seconds work I can get same result as 10+ minute adjustments with RPP (for the 1st image, 2nd image is next to impossible also with Aperture).

However what I was referring with "new" was that the camera is new to me - I assumed that Nex-6 is old model since there was already thread about Nex-7. For me it's very easy to do anything with 5DmkII files, I have shoot those since 2009 and I know limits of sensor and files very well.

Didn't clone out the dust spots in the sky:

    - darkened the sky using adjustment brush following the ridgeline
    - contrast
    - increased luminescence of red, orange, yellow somewhat

Love this scene, makes me want to pitch a tent over there in the golden last light somewhere. No doubt I'd want to come back and have another go at this one (in post if not an actual trip).

yay, this thread works as well as i hoped

@samuli: both images are handhold, so for the second one i had to use Iso 200 to get a handholdable time (with limited succes, it is kinda soft).
