I am picking up a 500 f/4.0 VR on Monday and was hoping to see some pics taken with this lens.

Sure I'll play. The 500mm is fantastic, although I'm in the process of upgrading to a 600mm.

wow, these are amazing. polar bears are my favorite animal of all time. thanks for sharing. very inspiring.

have you used ether a D800 or (e) with this lens?

I hope to buy a D4 sometime soon but will be shooting with a D800 at this time.

Yup, works great with a D800. The D4 is just quicker and has a much deeper buffer. I actually tried it with the D800 at first but the more I used it on the D4, the more I liked that combo better. Just need a smide more reach most of the time, so 600mm here I come. I'm already missing the lighter weight and smaller size fo the 500 though...

Jesus Christ, Steve... way to make the rest of us look bad before anyone else even participates. Leave us a little room, OK? Those shots -- especially the polar bears -- are truly stunning. Bravissimo!

I'll go ahead and add a couple of images to the pile here... haven't gotten away from civilization for a long time so there's one pair of birds from Ngorongoro, and then aviation is what you get:

Steve - That first PB is great.

Rodolfo - first plane shot is just top notch.

Kind of a different '500' direction for me - this was this Venus transit last summer. The extra spots were on the sun and not the sensor.

Amazing captures! I used to have the 500mm and loved it. As with most, I wanted more reach and went with a 600mm. I missed to ability to handhold it. The 600mm is limited on the tripod sometimes. Sometimes I missed shots because I have to put the tripod down and set up the 600mm. You will love the 500mm.

That's my experience with the 600VR as well and I "downgraded" to a 500VR last week (no images yet).

After all, you only have to go across to the Canon forum to find out that the only long glass is Canon, and hey, just look how many threads there are extolling the 1DX

Steve and Roldolfo, Those are some great examples! I had a 500/4 AFS II for about 6 months and sold it and bought the 400/2.8 VR.
When I saw Steve Perry's 500/4 go up for sale here It got me thinking abought another 500/4.I shoot alot of H.S. sports and the extra stop of the 400/2.8 helps alot under lights.
I've been doing more and more Bird and Nature photography lately and the more reach the better, the 400/2.8 VR and 1.4x is pretty much idistinguuishable from the bare 500/4 I had, but I can tell the difference from the 400+1.7 TC and the 500/4 + 1.4 TC.
Anyway I'm still kicking it around right now.
