p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Need help deciding on 2nd camera for Weddings.

My wife is the main photographer. She uses a D600. I am the 2nd shooter. I am using a D5100. With outdoor weddings the D5100 takes beautiful photos. When it's indoors in a church with the lights very dim the sensor just can't keep up. Even with fast glass. I have to either use ISO 3200 or higher and get grainy photos. Or use 1/60. When I use 1/60 if the people are moving sometimes the photos come out blurry. This is just not acceptable. My wifes D600 has better AF and better low light capabilities.

This wasn't reall an issue before. But as i'm getting better I am getting more and more good shots that are coming out too grainy and blurry. I have taken on a bigger role as the 2nd shooter than I use too and I feel the D5100 is holding me back.

I was thinking about getting a D600 for myself. However with the oil/dust issue I just can't see paying full price. We bought hers when it was on sale with the free kit lens. I am also considering a D800. However the left AF issue is kinda scaring me from getting one. Just because of the price alone I have a hard time accepting the fact it may have a pretty big defect. For $2500-$2900 this is just hard to swallow. So here I am. Wondering which to get. I have ruled out a D700 because I think for being used, no warranty, older sensor it's over priced at around $1500-$1600.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Looks like you would get a good use out of D7100. Otherwise, I'd get 2nd D600 or D800.

I had a D800 and now a D600, and even though the issues you mentioned are real, neither of my cameras had/have them. So, take that for what it's worth.

The D800's 36 megapixels are truly overkill most of the time, and especially for weddings (note: I'm not saying you CAN'T use one for weddings), so I would recommend the D600. It's a great camera, at a great price, and it never hurts to have identical cameras and files at a wedding.

If you don't think you'll miss the MP',s maybe a used D3? The D600 and D800 should work too (your reservations are noted) but you'll get to share batteries, grips, chargers, and handling familiarity. Other than your feeling of being overpriced, the D700 only has one card slot, and it takes only one card failure at the wrong time (though the chances are small) to make that seond slot priceless.

Whatever you get, have a backup for each of yourselves. D700's are great values right now, D7000's are as well.

Used D700 in good condition is an ideal camera for weddings (except one card slot)
D600 will be my second choice

D600. That way you both are using the same camera.

The hi-iso's in the d600 are on the same level as the D800... and for weddings, i think the D7100 might be an equal option.

SO, D7100 + two lenses

Shame, the D700 is THE wedding camera of choice

I think D600 is WAY overpriced for what it is. I've been shooting weddings for the past year with a D300 and D5100. My slowest lenses are f2.8. I've had no problem getting the shots with the D5100 and lenses like Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR. The VR really works well for me. If the lens didn't have VR, I'd be having big problems with sharpness. My main complaint with the D5100 is the focus point selector won't lock down. It's really easy to have it move off your subject and you don't realize it. The other thing I don't like about the D5100 is I don't have all the CLS capability of my SB-900. I guess by the time I'm getting my flash off camera, I'm using manual flash and CyberSync triggers anyway. I'm planning on getting a D7100 and will have a D5200 as backup. Weddings are a business. My strategy is to put as little $$ into equipment as I can get by with, to maximize my profits. I think the D7100 is the perfect camera for this. I'm betting a D7100 will outperform a D700 at ISO 3200, and might even tie the D600 (at about half the price!) Like others above, I REALLY like the idea of dual cards. I have had card failure before. Fortunately, not during a wedding.

Another thing to conside is the D7100 has a much improved AF over the D600. I think it may have passed the D600 up.

I too am a second shooter for a friend who does a lot of weddings. I have both a D3s and a D800. Hands down, the low light king is the D3s. If you were willing to spend $2900, put 3-500 more with it and have the best. Of course, that's just IMO.
Oh yeah, whatever you get, dual card slots are cheap insurance.

What makes you guys think the sensor in the D7100 will even come close to the D600 for low light? The D600 sensor is pretty new and it's like double the size of the D7100. I doubt it does much better than the D7000 in low light with the extra MP's.

I would buy a D7100 if it matched the D700 in low light. However I highly doubt it will. I know the D700 CRUSHED the D7000 in low light. Half my lenses are DX and half FX. I do like the AF on the D7100. However the lack of a AA filter scares me a little with the D7100. Moire effect can be pretty ugly. I'm pretty sure the D600 will highly outperform the D7100 in low light. I use to think the D5100 did well in low light also. Until I got a D600 and compared the two. NIGHT AND DAY difference. Do you have a link where I could see your wedding work with the D5100?

Wow. I just checked out a sample photo the D7100 took at iso 1600. Looks HORRIBLE compared to my D600. Very soft, horrible skin tones.

A D700 would be perfect or a D3.

It looks very heavily denoised like a P/S. One hopes the NEFs can be better processed.

What about two D700s? Slightly more than one new D800 (at least at the prices you've listed) and you have a backup.

I would suggest getting the same camera that your wife is using. I have always enjoyed having two bodies at a wedding that were the same; batteries, controls, accessories. That is nice for backup all of the way around.

I agree completely with Mr. Kazak.

If you don't want to pay full price, go refurb.

Seeing your replies, It looks as if your mind is already made up with the d600, so what's stopping you?

The 600 is a great camera for sure
