Nikon 24 f/1.4 or 35 f/1.4?

I'm going to try to get one while they're on sale. Which one should I be going for? They both seem awesome. I'd tend towards 24, but are there any noticeable differences in terms of IQ / distortion / bokeh / autofocus?

The 24/1.4G and Sigma 35/1.4 are both superb and are about at the same level. So just pick either one based on the focal length you want to shoot. I had the Nikon 35/1.4G before and didn't like it as much.

I vote Sigma 35mm f1.4.

I have the Nikon 24mm f1.4G also and rarely use it. I pick up the Sigma 9 times out of 10.

I've had both, the 24 was often too wide for a general use lens for me, the 35 was frustratingly slow at acquiring focus at critical moments in low light. Sold both got the 28 1.8. That one is a keeper.

What he said. They're both high quality lenses, so forget about performance differences. Just ask yourself if you need a 24mm lens or a 35mm lens and you'll make the better choice. If you don't know the answer, it may not be wise to buy either one yet.

If you're still shootin' the D7K cropper...you're decision is more like 36mm vs. 52mm

Personally, I like the 28 f1.8G better on mine but YMMV. I'd use a zoom at 24 & 35 and see
what FL you like better BEFORE droppin' some serious coin on that 24 onna DX body.

I've had both. the 35 just never impressed me while the 24g was just awesome. I originally preferred the 35mm focal length but because I was more satisfied with the 24g, I started using it more and have grown fond of the perspective you get with it.

That said, I think I will get the sigma 35 down the road because I still do like that focal length, just not the nikkor 35 1.4g

I owned the 24 when it first came out. I guess it was a big case of NAS. Wonderful lens, just didn't find much use for it personally. I'm now the happy owner of a sigma 35 (no problems with it by the way).

i bought the 24 f1.4 first, its an awesome piece of glass, unmatched by any other 24mm option, sharp edge to edge, no distortion in real world usage, great af, amazing optics.

I then bought the Nikon 35 F1.4G and its rapidly becoming my favourite lens. Tack sharp at all apertures, very accurate af (maybe a little slow, compared to say the 24-70 but ive had no problems following a bride and groom around a dance floor only lit by flashing disco lights).

recently had a look at the Sigma 35 and dont like it. A friend bought it and we compared them on a shoot and he is selling it for the Nikon.

The Nikon is as sharp (regardless of what some lens tests say), its got more accurate and stable af with all my af points on the D800, its weathersealed and it feels better to hold. The ridges on the Sigma feel terrible and they atttract dirt like you wouldnt believe. I dont think the Sigma's finish will be as durable over time, but thats just my opinion and who knows if it will have to be rechipped to work with future bodies.

the 24, 35 and 85 F1.4's replaced my 24-70 and ive not regretted the move for a second

As the previous posters indicated - it is all about your style. 24mm and 35mm are totally different beasts. I would suggest to try them both, and then make a decision. I use my 24mm with a Samyang 35mm, that I may soon swap for a Sigma (as soon as Sigma improves their QC). The Samyang is great - I just need AF.

I guess you'll be part of the minority that feels that way

I found just the opposite, only thing I miss is the weather sealing. The sigma feels better made.

Agree. The Nikon does not feel poor or anything but the Sigma feels closer to a Zeiss lens. And how lucky that the optics do, too.

I'd love to have the 24 f/1.4 for night photos - anyone have images to share? Perhaps the milky way, northern lights, or a nighttime landscape shot w/stars included?
