What I'm wondering is how this compares with the 300 f4 at 300mm? I realize it would be maybe a 1/2 - 3/4 stop slower but I would give that up for the flexibility if I could get as good or better IQ.

I'll definitely try one sometime this year. I really hope it's not just an updated version of the old lens, but one that's refined and tuned for the new generation of cameras (D4, D800, D600, etc.) So far I really like what I see however. Not sure why they chose to do an 80-400mm versus a more "modern" 70-400mm, but I guess it's irrelevant. However one of these on a D7100 or the imaginary D400, and a teleconverter in the pocket, would be a great combination for me.

The MTF appears to indicate that the 300mm is still going to be sharper. I doubt it will be as good or better, since the 300mm f/4 is a damn sharp lens.

Why is 70-400 more "modern"?

Every bit of focal length they add means more compromises. I'm glad they did not try to do any more - I frankly would have been fine if they had cut a little off the wide end.

There you go more affordable long lenses for the entry level full frame users as I mentioned sometime back in this forum.
Affordable with respect to those faster lenses costing two or three times more.

30% is better than nothing. And 4 is easier for me to work with than 4.5 as i tend to memorize standard aperture and shutter speed parameters for different lighting conditions.

Sorry, I misspoke - I was doing the math on the difference in element size :)

Of course, you're right. But it's still less than a third of a stop - and I was curious if it was just nitpicking, or if there was another reason why he specifically wants that small difference.

No. I said "appears" rather than "is" because it's just an impression from comparing the two charts. The 80-400 has some falloff, especially at the edges, that is not present in the 300mm, and it's simply not as sharp anywhere in the frame for the published charts. It's unlikely that Nikon would have published an MTF from their just-announced lens that is not the best representation. We'll see for sure when it's released, though!

Ahh, gotcha. Yes, I can see that it'd be an adjustment you wouldn't have to make - though of course, you'd have to make it everywhere else in the zoom range. Was just curious.

Something like 'subjective evaluations of incomparable objective tests' ...

In order to compare apples to apples, we should compare the published MTF test to the (unpublished) test of 300/4+TC14 combo, or the MTF test of 300/4 to the MTF test of the zoom set @ 300.

I would appreciate a performance (@ 300) slightly lower than the 300's on D800. That would be a 'great' performance for such a 5X zoom. I can't pretend the zoom has the same evenness as the prime @300 & f/5.6. Anyway, at the present time there is no comparison available between the two lenses (AFS 80-400 vs AFS 300/4); therefore, no meaningful conclusion can be drawn.
Last but not least, I've used both the AF-D 80-400 and the AFS 300/4. Well, thanks to VR I did take many more unblurred pictures using the zoom ... On tripod, the prime was better optically. But in real life, the 'old' zoom was significantly better. If this new 80-400 performs better than the old one (as it seems, according to MTF plots), it will satisfy the needs of many photographers.

David,

Thanks for providing some samples! What's your overall impression of AF speed/accuracy, build quality, bokeh etc? Did you do any PP sharpening or other adjustments? Which photos were @400mm?

Thanks!

These were shot today. Some background:

a. cloudy, dark, sometimes showers, generally really poor flat light.
b. all shot at ISO 1600 due to the poor light. All were shot off-hand with VR on.
c. all are shot 300-400mm, I have not fine tuned AF, just put it on the D3s and shot.
d. nothing special for camera settings, standard and some on the fly exposure comp.
e. the photos were all pulled into lightroom, cropped, and no other changes.
f. exported from lightroom with only sharpening for screen used.

My point is not to show really nice pics, but to give an idea what you can expect right from the camera. Of course I'd rather have nice light to test it in, but I'm thinking this is ok, I figure they will only get better with nicer light.

The keeper rate and general IQ doesn't come close to the 500VR, but I'm thinking it's a keeper considering the intended purpose and cost.

Jeff

I shot this a little dark, but still shows good detail

This is strictly to show how neutral colors expose with this body/lens, looks nice to me

I didn't really like how the squirrel pics came out, most color shifted to the green side badly with these being the best

another

I thought this came out ok, all considered

The great blue, ducks, turtle ride, and building are all at 400mm.

The AF is fast and accuracy seems good. Build is very good, outer body of lens is metal with zoom and AF rings made of plastic, inter tube which zooms out about 2 1/4" is plastic. Bokeh looks good at 400mm.

I did very little PP, a little +/- contract, sat and exposure, a tad of unsharp mask to the duck and great blue pic's.
