It's a rotating zoom mechanism (extending) according to the specs at dpreview. The overall lens length will change when you zoom.

Finally, after all these years this lens get an update. It does seem pricey at $2,700 and we will have to wait for all of the brick walls picture tests when people start getting their hands on it.

A couple of points:

- the tripod collar is included.

- on the site below there is a photo of the lens in a human hand, next to the old lens and a photo of it set at 400mm so that you can see how much it grows

Thanks for the info. Looks heftier and nicer than the older model, more like a 70-200 f/4 on steroids and I am sure it will be a stellar performer, however, the price is just way up there. Regardless, I am sure some who have been waiting on it will get it despite the hefty price.

It's funny, it looks larger than the weights indicate. It's only about a half pound heavier, even though a quick glance would make it look like it could easily be a full pound heavier.

...because it's tack-sharp throughout the zoom range, especially at 400mm, enough so that adding a 1.4x TC still results in very good image quality.

I hope?

No, it is not. The front of the lens moves in and out when you focus (but does not rotate).

Well, it appears that the front of the lens moves a little bit while focusing, but far less than when zooming as you can see here:

So I guess you are correct!

The ultrasonic focus motor adds about 1/2" to the girth of a lens. The zoom extension looks to be under 3", which is less than I expected. The lens body looks a lot like the new 70-200/2.8, which is well balanced and easy to handle.

Some better photos at that link. I don't see anywhere there nor elsewhere that the tripod collar is included. It's not listed as an included accessory either. At the same time, I don't see it offered for sale separately, so you could be right. It would help if you could provide a source.

<strike>I know this sounds hookey, but now I can't find the link where someone verified that it is included. I searched my browser history with no success.</strike>

However, as you mention, the collar is not listed as a separate accessory. Note that none of the high-end zooms on the Nikon USA site specifically list the tripod collar... all show the tripod mount but don't mention it. I checked the old 80-400, 70-200 f4, 70-200 f2.8, 200-400 f4 and they don't list the collar as an included accessory either.

Furthermore, the product page does show the lens with and without the collar and does not say in fine print "sold separately". It's my opinion that the collar is simply considered to be part of the lens itself and therefore not specifically mentioned.

Sorry, not much to go on in the way of proof.

UPDATE: I found it! Go to this page:

click on "New 80-400 AF-S: Tripod mount shown. Is it supplied?"
