These things are a Chinese clone of the 580EXII. I expect longevity, durability, and reliability to be subpar. I guess when they flake out in a year or two you can just throw them away and get new ones.

Meanwhile, I've got an original 580EX I've been using for 5 years that's been beat to hell and back and still works great.

Whatever works for you I guess.

I have one and plan to buy a few more. Is there an easy way to turn off the "beep"?

You hold down the little "music note" button until the light changes color then it's in silent mode.
I have 4 of these and they've worked great for 2 years.

i got the III version, love it especially using their cheapo trigger system as they have built in receivers. Of course this is from an amateur's point of view.

I've had shoe mount flashes fall from lightstands before. The fact that these are priced to be nearly disposable is a plus.

I've got three of them and they're great. The power/price of these guys is unbeatable. I've had them for about a year now and have yet to encounter an instance in which they've given me any difficulty.

Nikon pays "strobist" David Hobby to promote Nikon flashes !
The irony is that most of those posting on his strobist flickr site use Yongnuo flashes for OCF work.

talk about the ultimate irony !

Are you sure that you're not thinking of someone else?

David Hobby uses a variety of small flashes from Lumopro and Nikon (he seems especially fond of his Lumopro flashes but he uses the discontinued SB800's too) and he often uses Profoto monolights that he bought second-hand off of Ebay. He's pretty open about all of his gear and he's pretty blunt when he doesn't like something. If he was being paid by Nikon he wouldn't have made a special post just to bash the D600 when it came out. So I believe you are wrong.

Sorry. I was just giving you the benefit of the doubt because your comment was ridiculous to anyone who has read his blog on an even semiregular basis. Let's examine the facts:

Switched to medium format when the D800 came out
Consulted with Lumopro on the design of their previous flash
Highly recommended said Lumopro flash
Made a special post to inform his readers why they shouldn't purchase the D600
Has been flipping out over the Fuji x100s after testing it for Fuji and was apparently the first person to buy one

I actually disagreed with him on the Yong nuos (I own 2 myself) and other things he has said but your comment was so ill-informed it warranted a response.

go to the strobist flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/
See what David Hobby has said about Yongnuo flashes
See what flashes are used posting pics to the group

Yes, I noted that and my disagreement with it in my last post. That is a different point than falsely saying that he is receiving money from Nikon to promote their products.
