p.1 #1 · D600 settings question

Nikon noob here, been shooting Canon for years.. I am borrowing a d600 and 300mm f4 to shoot some middle school track. What settings would you suggest on the camera. Will be late afternoon (4p on) here is Texas. Sunny now but will start down about 5/5:30 ish.

I think the hardest thing for me to get used to when I switched to Nikon is the AF modes. I guess for track you'd want to use the continuous af mode. You can also choose if you want to manually pick the AF point or have the camera do it. Then there is the iso setting, I've found the auto setting pretty useful as you can customize it somewhat. If you want to pick the iso you should have no problem shooting up to 6400.

Just a few tips that might help:

- Shutter priority 800+
- Auto ISO (max 6400)
- AF-C, D21 (or AF-C Auto which I haven't tried but heard it works)
- Menu a1 (AF-C priority selection): Release
- CH mode on the dial
- Use a fast SD card (95MB/s)
- a monopod might be useful

Good start! I will add a couple:

Assign AE-L/AF-L button to AF-On (f4)
Set (a3) Focus Tracking with lock-on to "OFF"

Similar recommendations to the others except I would put the A1 menu to "focus" and I would try the 9 center points for autofocus. On some occasions 21 pt works better but generally 9 pt works the best for me.
