p.1 #1 · 70-200 focus speeds

Looking to upgrade my 80-200 2.8 to one of the 70-200 versions. I'm considering the 2.8 VR I, and the 70-200 F4. Aperture isn't the concern, just focus speed. Does the 2.8 keep up with the newer lenses in focus speed?

I find the vr1 focus speed to be really fast and accurate. Not sure about comparison to the newer f/4 however. I have no issues with the vr1 at least relative to other fast nikon glass I have.

If aperture isn't a concern, the VRIII of the f/4 will be better for you. It's also sharper in the corners. I haven't had much time with the f/4, but I won't say it has faster or slower AF speed than the 2.8. The 2.8 has been my go-to lens for some time now.

Both of my 2.8s (VR I and VR II) were/are fast on a D3 and now D4. Can't speak to the f4.0, but I wonder if the f4.0 can keep up with the 2.8 VR II.

As an FYI, you may also want consider vignetting in deciding. If you're using an FX body, the VR I has significant vignetting. That's the only reason I sold the VR I for the VR II.

VR1 is fast, not 24-70 fast but then again it's a monster.

You won't be dissapointed.

I've been very impressed with the f/4 so far, and I love how light it is compared to my old 80-200 f/2.8.

+1

The 70-200/4 is a solid upgrade from the 80-200 for sure. VRiii is very awesome, and the AF is snap-quick.

How does the 70-200 F4 compare to the 24-70?

Is the 70-200 II worth an upgrade from the 80-200 AF-S?

For focus speed? Seems like I've heard the 24-70 is one of the fastest out there, but I guess someone will compare it at some point. I was never too unhappy with how fast the 80-200 f/2.8 focused on my D300s, but the 70-200 f/4 is clearly faster. And really quiet. And light.

Are you asking about the 70-200 VR II f/2.8?

Either way, I'd say the big difference is going to be sharpness, especialy in the corners, and the utility of VR. My guess is focus speed isn't massively faster.

I recently made this upgrade (80-200 to the VR II) and it's a huge difference in price but overall I think it's worth it if you can wait and find a used VR II for around $1800. Autofocus is fast & accurate and the VR is a nice addition though I never look at it as a necessity unless you're at low shutter speeds. There's a small but noticeable difference in sharpness as well. It seems like every version of the 70-200/80-200 is extremely sharp but the VR II is obviously the best so far. Also the color seems a lot better compared to the 80-200mm.

I just tried the 70-200 f4 on a cloudy day.
It was fast focusing and sharp.
I found out afterwards that I did not have the VR turned on.

I own the 80-200mm AF-S Nikon, and my customer/buddy owns both the VR1 and VR2 versions.

On my D700 (with the latest firmware installed); here are my findings:

1) 80-200mm AF-S is the slowest of the three above lenses to focus IF you are totally de-focused inside the viewfinder and press the shutter-button to get the lens into focus (going from infinity to MFD/vise-versa) due to its longer focus mechanism the silent-wave motor has to drive. The VRII is the fastest focusing lens of all three: if you deliberately focus from a far subject to a nearby subject with all three lenses, it will the the fastest to lock initial focus.

2) lens drive of course is also subjective to the body used.

3) If focus is already achieved on the subject (using AF-C mode) and LOCK-ON set to 1 (short) or OFF, all lenses will focus extremely precise and fast because unlike the above situations (of having near and far subjects) the lens has only small incremental turns to make with the silent-wave motor.

Yes, if:
- You need VR
- You plan on using teleconverters

Other than that the 80-200AFS holds up quite well against the VRII with the newer lens having slightly better corners.
I have both (and the 70-200/4 AFS and need to sell my beloved 80-200AFS soon due to redundancy more so than IQ differences . . .
