We may be seeing Canon ultra wide angle lenses with fluorite lens element in the near future.
Canon has just released a 14mm f/2.8 Fluorite optical formula patent. This could be used in a future 14mm prime, 14-24mm or 16-35mm zooms.

Thank you, Fred, the writing has been on the wall for that one.
Naturally, as we all know it full well, fluorite elements are extremely expensive, and it should come as no surprise that the projected price of 16-35L MkIII, containing one fluorite element, is in the vicinity of $3,800. However, the lens will generate an increase in microcontrast in extreme corners, a feature which your clients will appreciate immensely.

The problem is, it may take a few years for this design to be put in production, if any. BTW, that applies to both companies, Canon and Nikon.

More white bodies with green rings...interesting...black with green rings would be acceptable as well I suppose

Just have to figure out how me wallet could handle it

Thought the 400 DO was the only lens to use Fluorite, prob need to do my homework, may have mis-thought, when I hear Fluorite the 400 DO and it's green stripe jumps to mind

Flourite is used in the 70-200's, 100-400 and superteles.

Jerry, perhaps the green ring colour made you think of flouride tooth paste.

I think 50-200L was the first small EF lens which contained a fluorite element.
800L is the first EF lens which contains two fluorite elements.

Interestingly, the first commercially available camera lens to use fluorite, the Canon FL 300/5.6 introduced in 1969, also used two fluorite elements.

Peter, after I picked up my 1st T-90; in 86, and Canon subsequently KYed us buy dumping the FD line of lenses, I used my film gear a ton, took me a decade to un-piss my self off....not switch to Nikon. The investment was a lot for my wage level when orphaned...I was not happy.

The EOS-3 woke me up, hooked me on AF and USM...Canon had me by the short hairs once again, I've not really delved into lens element make up much. My professional interests lay elsewhere in bits-n-bytes and since 76 with that 1st Apple 1 that ball keeps-a-rollin. However time to read is here now so I will again begin to do so with lens element configurations/materials for those lenses in my kit and those the envy of my eye

Thanks Peter/Rob, off to the Canon museum I go...

I still have that lens in a closet somewhere. I also had it's mate, the FL 500 5.6. They were both great lenses for their time.

Well, then, pull it out of the closet and slap an EF mount conversion kit on it! If you don't want to bother with manual focus, I'm sure you can find someone else here who can put those lenses back to work.

BTW, I believe Robert might still own that fluorite 50-200L, and last time I spoke to him about it, he liked the lens.

Another one that was designed with a fluorite element was the economy priced 70-200 f/4 non-IS. However, that was then......new fluorite lenses will command new Canon prices which are invariably quite hurtful.

Just like the MDP, 200-1.8, and 50 1.0 though not in their league it has its own uniqueness, I like the colors it produces reminds me a lot of the good ole FD lenses.
