Sorry for another post on ballhead, monopod and Chubby Fatboy I planned to use GM5541 with D800 & 200/2. Is Q10 sufficient? Is its 100lbs load an legitimate claim? I'd use a BH-55 or similar large head for normal loads, but you will want a gimbal head or at least a sidekick for a heavy lens. EBH Feb 25, 2013 at 10:35 AM

You can't trust any of the weight claims because there's no standardized way to measure it. What are they measuring? How are they measuring it? The ball size is often a more important aspect. If you're putting it on a 5 series anyway, I'd pick up the Q20. It's not like you're trying to save weight. Feb 25, 2013 at 11:25 AM

EBH No immediate plan to acquire another lens other than 200/2, which is not a light one in any sense. It's 3kg, same weight as 300/2.8 and and isnit much lighter than a 500/4. You never know what you may get in the future and with a 5-series it won't matter; you're covered. If you're going with Markins get the Q20, not the Q10. The ball diameter on the Q20 is 48mm but on the Q10 it's 44mm. A bigger ball will invariably give you smoother operation and be more stable. Since you like the Markins take a good look at the Arca-Swiss Z1, its ball diameter is 54mm. The Markins heads are copies of the Arca-Swiss designs, they're good copies but IMO not up to the original. If you like the Z1 get the one with the round base and buy a Kirk or RRS clamp for it. Are we talking about the GM5541, which is a monopod rated at 50 pounds load, or are we talking about a 5 series tripod? There is no current Gitzo tripod with "5541" as the numerical part of the model number, and your post mentions monopod in the text, so my guess is you are talking monopod. Assuming we are talking about a monopod, I would suggest you forget about using a ball head of any kind, and just get a monopod head like one of the versions of the Really Right Stuff MH-01 tilting monopod heads. On a monopod, ball heads are more difficult to use that a monopod tilt head, plus they cost more for a similar load rating. I am very happy with my Gitzo GM3551 monopod combined with the RRS MH-01 tilt monopod head. The lens I use the most on that monopod setup is the Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS, which is almost the same weight as the 200mm lens you mention. Also note that with the GM3551 monopod, you do not need to extend the smallest section at all on level ground unless you are well over 6 feet tall, so you get the performance of a 4 section monopod except for the occasional times when you need more length. I blame EB-1 for leading me down the path I think the only reason to use a ball head with a monopod is if you already have a ball head and don't want to buy another type.
