So, I have been wanting to get in to photography for some time, but have never had the money. Now I do, and I'm looking at buying my first real decent camera. I have done the research, and have kind of settled on the d7000.
The release of the d7100 excited me, because it means the d7000 will drop in price because of it.
So the discussion point here is, what will the price of the d7000 look like in 3 months? Is it going to drop enough in that time to be worth waiting, or should I go ahead and buy it in the next week?

Alright, since no one liked that question ( I am still interested in what people think about buying the d7000 today vs. in a month ) I have another question:
What lens should I get as a first lens to go with the d7000?

Thanks

In three months, I don't think the D7000 will drop much at all. My opinion.

But, while we're at it, look at B&H for example, they have a Nikon instant rebate of $300. until 3/2 on a D7000, body only. Believe it's brand new. (No, I don't work for them.) Total for a D7000 $896.xx. Free Shipping looks like. Wow, that's good, but why not wait and get the D7100 for $1,200., body only,..which I believe it's priced at.

So, without that rebate, a brand new D7000 is around $1,196. (at B&H anyway). So, to answer your question. In 3 months, I would say $950. approx. Just a guess. Body only. Brand new.

How about a 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX.

I would love to spring for the D7100... But I have a strict $1000 cap. I've been finding the D7000 for $700 new, body only, or $1000 in kits with a few accessories and a lens. (Overstockdigital, with warranty)

Interesting to hear it may not drop much. Thanks for the response.

A 'Nikkor 70-300 VR AF-S' is always a great choice for longer stuff. Depends what you shoot though, obviously. Don't get the non-VR. It's not the greatest. The VR is better in every way. Period. Some guys also like the Tamron 70-300 VC. I believe it's close to the Nikkor VR, if not just as good. And a little cheaper in price as well. VC is their version of VR. Vibration Control vs. Vibration Reduction. Sorry if you already knew some of this. Wasn't sure. Good luck! I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

I personally don't have the D7000, but it's had such great reviews and such great ISO performance, I can't see the price dropping much anytime soon. For brand new anyway. If you find a good deal on a D7000, I'm sure you won't regret it. I would love to have one myself.
I was actually hoping for a D400 to be announced later on; otherwise I will probably get the D7100 eventually.

Here's what I think - it will drop a bit but the best deal is to buy it refurbished from a reputable dealer like Adorama or Cameta for around $750 USD. The price may go down a bit in the coming months as the D7100 is produced and starts to show up on shelves. But hey, $750 is a good price for a camera you can use for years to come. You can wait if you want but 3 years from now you won't miss the $100 or so it might come down in the coming months.

For that matter $1200 for the D7100 is not that much compared to $750, for a tool to be used, abused and be your photo companion for a good chunk of your life. Don't overthink it too much just go ahead now and get what you can afford.

That is a tough question since no one can predict the future market. Go ahead and buy one now. I don't see the price dropping much. Its still is a great camera even with the D7100 coming out.

I agree with everything you said, InlawBiker! I've done business with Cameta many times. Great company, in my opinion. I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them in the future as well.

JtMeuret, I actually don't really know much of that stuff, yet... I have been researching nearly non stop for a couple weeks now, but mainly only in deciding on a camera. Understanding lenses is my next feat. I really appreciate all of the help in this regard!

Even over a new one for $699 with a one year warranty from a site like OverstockDigital?

Oh, and on the lens... Again my price cap is $1000, and I'm assuming the camera will be $700. So I'm looking for a $300 starter lens. I'm most interested in Landscape/Nature.

I have never heard of OverstockDigital so I would have a hard time sending them $700. Did you research them pretty well?

Stay away from overstockdigital, they are your basic bait and switch company.

What the! Overstock Digital NO NO NO!!

As a new photographer, the first lesson to learn is not to kill yourself on price shopping, you will end up steering your ship into the pirates.. Use reputable dealers, or the buy & sell board here, they aren't going to screw you.

The D7000 has already taking it's big price hit. Price speculation is silly.

If you have a "Strict $1,000 cap" also look into the D5100 plus an 18-200mm vrI or vrII zoom. It's a compromise lens, and has a few flaws, but for your first year you will probably get more enjoyment out of it. Buy it used, there's plenty around. You can then, a few months later add a 35mm f/1.8G for night and portrait.

I believe there is a brand new one on B&S from Amazon for $750. I don't remember the seller. Search it.

With D7000, you have a lot of lens options because it works with non AFS lenses including many manual focus lenses. For $250 or $300, I would go with the 18-70mm ($150 used) and the 55-200mm VR ($125 used).

I think the D7K used is going to be a bargain. Also, while I'd get a zoom, I wouldn't miss getting a 35 f/1.8G.
