p.1 #1 · Gitzo 3542LS

Gitzo 3542 LS-Getting ready to purchase this. Looking for a relative lightweight but stable tripod of this general height, no middle column, that is compact when contracted

Anything negative to say about this tripod other than hefty price?

Better options?

that price isn't so hefty. but there is a better designed, executed set of legs out there. but if $725 is hefty its not an option

The 3542LS is 13% heavier than the tripod it replaced last year, the 3541LS. I understand most of that extra weight is in the base which is bigger that the base on the 3541LS. Not sure this is a Good Thing. It's also a bit longer folded than the 3541LS, and the street price is a lot higher. You might want to consider a used 3541LS which in excellent condition should go for around $500. One such went on eBay for that this last week.

However if you only want to buy new the 3542LS is widely available or you could look at the Benro C3780T but ignore the Benro G3 ballhead. The Benro C3780T costs $509.00 and weighs 4.1 lbs, a bit more than the 3541LS but a bit less than the 3542LS. I nearly bought a C3780T a couple years ago but bought a 3541LS when it dipped below the Benro in price with a double discount.

DGardner,

I just took my Gitzo 3542LS on a two week trip to Singapore, Cambodia and Thailand. It worked perfectly and was rock solid throughout the trip.

I was able to carry it onto all flights, but not with the ballhead attached - the security at one airport baulked when I tried to do that, so I took it off and stored it in my bag and they were fine with just the tripod strapped to the side of my carryon-bag.

I've used mine through dusty temples, on the beach, etc without any problems.

Most people buy a cheap tripod and then buy a more expensive one when they realise they are not happy with the cheap one.

I decided to avoid that trap by buying a really good one to start off with - expensive, but it should last me a good 20 yrs or so.

The weight difference cbetween the 3541 and 3542 comes down slightly when you consider adding a safety plate to the 3541.
