Just curious what you all think of the New Nikon D7100? I have read several nikon d7100 reviews and think it is a great camera. Think it is worth upgrading if you currently own a D7000?

I will be moving to this from the D7k. It is the AF module that is pulling me in, and the added DR that it offers.

I didn't have any issues with the 39 pt. autofocus system on the D7000 but the 51 pt. system could be a bonus. I am curious to see how the lack of an AA filter works out. One of the demo photos has amazing detail. I have a friend who loves his D800e with no AA filter. I shoot video but rarely used that feature on my D7000 because I am not a fan of 24p video. I think I would use the D7100 a lot more for video. The headphone jack is awesome. I am a little disappointed in the buffer size. I ran into the buffer on my D7000. I know the 7100 is passing a whole lot more information through the buffer. The 1.3 crop mode is intriguing. Have to see how that works out. I want one. I just can't decide if I want to be an early adapter or wait to see what it does in the real world.

I think the benefit of the additional 1.3x crop will allow af points to cover the entire frame which is beneficial to sports shooters. I would probably wait a little bit to see if any early adopters run into quality control issues first.

amusing rationalization on the AF. the old "more is better reasoning". I don't use all 51 on a D4 most of the time as it is.

Yes, however this is not simply a more is better rationale. More may or may not be better, but the AF this uses is more akin to my D700 than the D7k, and I expect it to be better. But if you read my comment, it was also the extra headroom in DR.

It's no rationalization in my mind.

I'm finding the 39 pt system in the D600 to not be nearly as fast or accurate as the 51 pt in the D800 & 800E when shooting BIF or motorsports (with the same lenses) using both single point and multiple points. I'm happy with the D600 as an FX body when compared to the 800 and 800E (owned both) in most respects except the AF system.

DavidWEGS: yes I did read your comment on DR and I never touched it because its true. what I did comment on was only referencing the subject of AF points.

rd4tile: that's right it is a perception. I shoot with both a D4 in my work and the D7000 and I found little difference except when i'm shooting high speed work and then its just a matter of fps and high iso. since I do occasionally shoot different types of "birds in flight" I hardly ever use the full field. I guess its varying technique.

I guess if you can't get it with 39 you'll get with 51.

I do a lot of work just across from that building at LSP

The D7100 uses a modified AF system from the D300s, ditching the D7000's AF (which most likely moved to the D5200). Some people who had previously owned a D300s, that moved to a D7000, complained that the D7000's AF wasn't up to par. This should solve their problems, with the bonus of an additional 12 AF points, and AF ability up to F/8 on the central 15 points.

sjms: so your experience is there is no difference between the 2 different AF systems other then one has 12 more points then the other?

Maybe it is my technique then because so far I'm not getting the results I got with the D800. I'm relatively new to Nikon's AF systems though so maybe that's the problem.

Has a DR improvement been stated for the D7100 over the D7K? I didn't think DxO had published yet...

It doesn't seem like it would be a big jump for D7000 users, but that is just my opionion.

I think the main folks who'll benefit from the 51-point AF are guys shooting long glass and/or with TC's, which apparently the 39-point would struggle with. Too bad the birders and sport shooters who make up most of those folks are going to dislike the buffer of the D7100.

If you can get good results with your D800, your D7000 shouldn't be delivering less. I'd have it checked out.

I would venture to say it will as it most likely will use the imager from the D600 which does have more DR.

again I have to say that depending on conditions a 39 point AF really isn't going to "struggle" as much as one thinks as long as there is texture/pattern to work with. yes a 51 will do a little better as long as it has something to work with too. as it has been shown the Canon 1Dx does not fare as well as the D4 even though it has 61 or so points in lower light. its not so much as how many as it is how you use them. in the end neither one will focus quickly or well on a blank wall.

I'm referring to a pretty in-depth post/analysis from a blog that was posted here a while back. He pretty consistently demonstrated that the AF of the D7000 wasn't functioning well with very long prime glass and (IIRC) "shorter" primes with TC's.

His tests were a pretty extreme set of intersecting photography conditions, were repeatable nonetheless.

I knew you'd ask

The search engine here is terrible, and I couldn't see anything in my post history, but a little googling came up with it:

http://www.naturalart.ca/artist/fieldtests/D7000_firstimpression.html

Maybe his copy was bad? His blog wasn't the only reference I've seen out there, and generally these cats seem to be more of the Trenchmonkey ilk (i.e. they know their gear, AF systems, etc. pretty well)

ok, since the longest I own is a 300/2.8 1.7x and 1.4x with no real ills and when needed I get anything longer a request it. I have not used this body enough with longer lenses then above. I will have to defer to the expertise of mr trenchmonkey in this situation.

The setups I noticed the differences in AF speed/accuracy between the D800E and D600 are already somewhat limited due to the TCs specifically the 70-200 with 2X and a sigma 120-300 with 1.4X and 2X. The D600 is fine AF wise with the bare lenses.

I've shot my 80-200 2.8 two ring with a Kenko Pro 2.0x TC on my D7000 just past sunrise with no problems. The camera will struggle in very low light (darker things in a room lit by a monitor, dark areas of a parking garage, etc.) with even a 17-55 2.8 by itself, though. It'll definitely be a good comparison test when I get my hands on a D7100.

M635_Guy wrote:

Since the D7100 uses the same sensor as the D5200, minus the AA filter, comparing it vs the D7000 should be mostly accurate:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/(appareil1)/850%7C0/(brand)/Nikon/(appareil2)/680%7C0/(brand2)/Nikon

Near base ISO, they're roughly the same, but the difference in DR increases the higher the ISO goes, which interestingly enough doesn't affect the final DR score. Color sensitivity is increased across the board, and signal to noise ratio gets an improvement at the highest ISOs. Not sure if the lack of AA filter will help the SNR score with more retained detail, or if there would be any other minor tweaks in the sensor or processing that could end up with better results, but this is a good baseline until we get the real tests.

Maybe it's worth the upgrade, depending on:

1. What lenses you have
2. What you shoot
3. How big your print

The D7100 is being shipped with the 18-105mm lens, a lens that even the D7000's sensor was showing the weakness of. If you are just going to use lower priced consumer zooms on it like that, then you likely won't see a whole lot of benefit. If you crop a lot AND routinely use a tripod, the extra resolution could come in handy. If you are often making very large prints, e.g. 20x30, you could see a benefit. If you are using low priced lenses, rarely use a tripod, and 99% of your shots end up on the internet, you might be ahead to spend the money on something else. Generally speaking, a camera is not all that important. My thinking is the best way to go is to skip every other generation and concentrate your money on lenses.

Bluebomber above:
Has it been confirmed the D7100 is using the same sensor as th D5200? I've been reading that it is not.
