p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Odd fractal looking "smudge" on lens that won't go away, internal?

Hello,
I noticed a smudge on my Canon 100mm f2.8 macro lens and thought it was a typical fingerprint but upon closer inspection looking very closely seems to resemble snow flakes, a fractal pattern or feathering.

I have cleaned with cleaner and microfiber and it doesn't seem to be on the surface. Any other ideas? Could it be a smudge on the inside? I don't think it could be moisture and why would moisture leave such an odd pattern?

Thanks

I'll try to take a shot when I get home if it will even show up. Ironically I'd probably need my macro lens to best show the "smudge".

Hopefully its not a fungus though and not on the inside.

Ouch, that is exactly what fungus looks like.

Just a thought: can't you "burn" it out, with sun and a magnifying lens ?

UV light should kill fungus, but it wo';t remove the residue, nor will it fix things if the fungus has etched the surface or eaten the glue between cemented elements. I've had about a dozen lenses with fungus that were checked by my local Camera Repair Centre. About half of them were repaired OK and the other half were thrown in the garbage.

I am not sure wheter it is fungus or for example cristallisation pattern from sea humidity, or even others.
Fungus I would describe in most cases as spider web like.
