I'd like to know how you handle this.

I'm composing my photos during shooting and then when time to print at standard sizes, its not all smiley face.
My photos are at the 3:2 ratio and to print 11x14 or 8x10, the composition doesn't fit well. If I keep the ratio but don't crop, then there are white bands around the standard size print, such as at the top and bottom.

Is the answer always to make sure to shoot looser to allow for cropping to different ratio?
Do you have custom matte created and print at the size that fits the ratio such as 8x12, 10x15, etc?
Something else?

I order precut 10 X 15 mats from www.matcutter.com. I order them to fit 16" X 20" frames, so have a nicely proportioned mat border.

I cut my own mats when the composition doesn't really fit 2:3.

If you look around, there's no reason to be limited to 8 X 10, 11 X 14, etc.

I shoot looser, crop for best comp/aesthetic.
Mostly print at 11x14, 12x18,16x20 but also custom sizes

IMO no matter how you shoot some images just seem to demand to be cropped to some arbitrary aspect ratio for the resulting composition is so much more compelling. Therefore some custom matting is in order. I do have a mat cutter.

Often image can be cropped into standard Aspect Ratio with good composition. This allows most image to be matted with standard cut mats. I wrote a Photoshop Plug-in script which can be use in actions to help you crop to standard aspect ratio. Actions to do a standard center corp are simple as are interactive action that give you control over composition. The AspectRatioSelection plugin is in my crafting action package
