Hi all, so I'm looking at possibly upgrading to another Nikon. I currently have a 5100 and was considering the 7000 because I know I can use the internal settings to control off camera flash units (I have two SB700's) and I think the shutter/flash sync is higher then that of the 5100 (the 5100 is 1/200). But before I decide to pull the trigger on the 7000, I wanted to find out if there is another professional/semi-professional body that is similar to the 7000 or slightly better (but still in the same price range) I should also consider. Ideally I would LOVE to jump to the FX sensor but don't have the cash for one.

Any input would be great.

Wait for the first D7100 to start hitting the market, find a cheap D7000 for dirt cheap. Enjoy your new camera.

Is the 7000 considered a professional model or a highend semi-pro model?

Also I just read that the max sync speed with the 7000 using a SB700 is 320. Can someone confirm this as true or false.

Why does either matter? It's not a metal body if that's what you were wondering.

You can make money with it, so it's a professional model

The D7000 is a camera aimed at serious amateurs. It's not a pro camera by any stretch. What do you want it to do? That's the way to decide on camera gear. As for the sync, I haven't looked it up but I am betting that the 1/320s is just the high speed sync that's possible with a dedicated Nikon flash (such as SB910). The flash fires rapidly like a strobe. It has fairly low power doing that. More likely the true sync speed is 1/250s at best.

the idea of waiting and watching holds great value. The D7100 is supposed to be released by the end of March. There might be a lot of used D7000s' available as people upgrade. Wait until you see one with a low activation count at a price that is agreeable to you. As to what the specs are, a quick search for reviews of the camera will answer many of your questions. As to whether or not it is a pro body ... that will be determined by you. If you take it, make images that provide you with income - guess what? its a pro body. Sometimes however, it a case of appearances. Depending on what you intend to shoot, you could end up in a situation where you are surrounded by people with more expensive cameras who will look down their nose at you. This is basic penis envy - where you will be regarded more on size and less on performance.

I'd look at a used D300s if I were you unless you need better video.

D7100 is more pro than the D7000, especially the af and functions are more like a D300s than a D7000 replacement. (and you have 7fps)

"pro" "amateur" "enthusiast"....meaningless labels. If it has the features you want then it's a good fit.

Last night I dreamt I ordered a pair of Nikon cameras (D800 and D7100) but the seller shipped me a D7000 instead...I was going to send it back before but when I realized it was a D7000 and I ordered a D7100 I really wanted to send it back for sure.

so you bought a camera that's not released... that should have set off red flags to begin with.

The D7000 does indeed have a metal chassis. I think it's almost certain we will
never see the D400, unless it's a cheaper version of the D600.
