p.1 #1 · Interesting Light Effect

This is a picture taken 2 weeks ago in Yosemite in the early afternoon as the sun was moving behind a ridge. There were zero clouds in the sky, no rain drops in the air. How does this triple rainbow get generated? Why is the shadow of the trees interrupting the effect? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Heinz

Thanks Paul,

I don't think it's a sun dog. There are no secondary suns generated by high level ice crystals. If the effect is at a high level, it would not be impacted by the shadow of the trees.

I think its a similar effect to a brocken spectre (but in reverse), caused by diffraction of the sunlight by ice crystals or water droplets that are between the observer and the light source. It may not have been raining, but I'm sure there was some moisture in the atmosphere. I have also seen this happen when wind blows a little snow off the trees and it floats around. Either way its diffraction of some sort.

Or maybe its refraction -- one of those two Its been awhile since I took physics.
