Reading the specs I'd imagine Canons patent lawyers might be taking an even stronger interest than photographers.
Found this on the UK importers site:
"The tilt-shift function in the Samyang T-S 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC allows for smooth and fine adjustment of the focal plane by an angle of +/-8.5 and enables parallel shift of the optical axis by +/-12 mm. To make Tilt-Shift function even more seamless, both the lens mount and the Tilt-Shift section may be rotated on the optical axis. The Tilt-Shift section may be rotated left by 90 degrees (with 30 degree adjustment), while mount of the lens may be rotated both in left and right direction by 90 degrees (with 30 degree adjustment). Filter size is 82mm."
So it would seem to have independent movements and a filter thread.

It will have to go some to match the Canon optically but looks great value, even more so in the other available mounts where other options are more limited.

Why? Canon don't have a patent on the super-rotator design, nor (to the best of my knowledge) the inclusion of a filter thread.

Likewise there's no patents on having 16 elements in a lens, a maximum aperture of f/3.5 or the 24mm focal length as far as I know. There lenses are superficially very similar in specification, but will have a different optical formula making this effectively a different lens.

I've never had a tilt shift lens. I've never been that bothered, especially for the price, as it's very specialist for weddings and I wonder if the effect is becoming a little old now.

If this was £600 ($999), I might give it a go though, but I bet it'll be £899 or £999

I bought the new version of Canon's 24 mm T/S lens several months ago, but I am very glad that Samyang now offers a competitive product. It will be interesting to see how this lens is doing in regard to vignetting when fully shifted - one major improvement when coming from the old Canon T/S version and moving to the new one.

Price-wise, the older Canon 24 mm T/S version is still cheaper used than this new Samyang version given that Samyang offers simple tilt versus shift rotation as in the new Canon version of this lens. I have used the old Canon version for many years and took fantastic photos with it.

This will be available in Sony mount, but even if it hadn't, another simple adapter would do the trick.

I sold my Canon 24TSE after I bought the 24-70 f2.8 mk2. I find 17 a much more useful size for this style of shooting and I do only landscapes. I wish I could get a 14 or 15 TSE. Actually shift only would be fine.

The Canon 24TSE mk2 was the sharpest lens under 500mm that I ever owned. But it was used mostly without tilt or shift. At 24 and lower, shift is the most valuable feature and as you get wider shift is almost imperative to avoid perspective distortion. I returned my Zeiss 15 f2.8 because it did not have shift.

Unless you are doing low to the ground shots, or want special shallow dof effects, you don't really need tilt at 24 from a standing position.

Interesting "BUT" i'd like to see some real tests and some owners opinions before I spend a grand on a lens by Samyang. I'd feel more comfortable buying a used canon t&s on the buy and sell forum, they are quality and have been around for a long time and have a proven track record.

If all you're after is the blurry tilt effect, a Lensbaby will do much the same trick at a lesser price.

The 'tilt shift effect' is IMO much better done in post if thats all your after.

TS lenses work best when you cant see it was a TS lens used.

A super rotator design allows infinite rotation in either direction to both tilt and shift axis. Thus there cannot be any electrical contact to the camera for aperture control or the internal cable would wind up and break. All lens elements, including the aperture are forward of the tilt/Shift mechanism. Super rotator designs will necessarily be fully manual for focus as well as aperture.

The Samyang will undoubtedly be fully manual, and it is possible (likely?) that it may allow infinite rotation of both tilt and shift axis. It is possible that the knobs controlling shift lens movement as well as the lock knob for shift may strike (or the access be impaired by) the overhang from pop up flash on crop bodies. This is true for both Canon and Nikon and Canon bodies with the corresponding Nikon/Canon TS lenses.

$1000 is a lot of money for a Samyang. Just sayin'

My guess is that the Samyang 24 TSE will have quite a bit of distortion. On a regular lens that is not an issue if you don't mind correcting it in post and loosing a bit of resolution in the process (since you are stretching pixels). But with a tilt/shift lens its much tougher to correct since when you shift you are also shifting through the curvature of the lens distortion and deviating from the center of it thus making it harder to correct if you shift the lens to a different amount each time.
