I have read tons on this debate. The 1.8G has been hard to find, so I was unable to test. Well finally got a 1.8 in today and compared it to my 1.4. Both on a D600.

I used single point of focus on the same spot (below my screenshots) and just did two quick screen grabs (1:1). I did this at 1.8, 2.8 and 4. The 1.8 won every single time.

I thought this was very interesting, in my heart I wanted the 1.4 to win mainly cause of the huge double price it commands. I guess for people having to have that 2/3 stop you have to have it their is no way around it. I guess for the rest of the world the 1.8 is the clear winner.

(PS i have 1.4 for sale )

Hope this helps somebody. I know I know I guess I should have listened to all the posts...It was just a bit hard for me to believe it was a clear difference. I even had somebody who is not a camera person come look at the pics and right off the bat they picked the 1.8 over the 1.4.

Thanks

Have you focus adjusted your 1.4? It looks like it needs it.

Although the 50 1.4G is not extremely sharp at 1.4, it's also not that soft as your results. As Michelle mentioned, try Af tuning & manual focus. The main problem I found with my 50 1.4G was focus speed & not sharpness.

I've tried both and for me, it's hard to tell the difference when both are wide open. even a f/2.8, i believe they're both pretty sharp. I'm just glad I got the 1.8 instead of the 1.4.

that looks like focus error. use contrast detect focus in liveview.

but I'm not saying the 1.8 couldn't be sharper, I have one and it's terrific!

The difference is what is inside internally:

That looks horribly off. Like the 1.4 needs micro adjustments.
