p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 24-85 VR used value (d600 kit lens)

As everyone jumped on the d600 deal and then proceeded to sell off the lens, the value of a $600 lens went down to $350-$325 used. While it is generally accepted to be a good performer, is this a used price that we expect to stay or is it going to rise as long as there are no more d600 kit sales?

Asking because, while i like the lens, i dont really use it often, but am willing to wait to resell if the value will climb a bit.

Thanks!

I suspect that, if the lens does climb in value again, it will be a long time before it does so - and it's likely that it won't climb by much. The used market got so saturated, and now that the rebates are in place the lens is down another hundred bucks from its new price again.

The 18-70 actually suffered much the same fate. It was a $500 lens new, and it goes for $150-200 on the used market.

The 24-85 mm VR differs from the 18-70 mm in having stabilisation, covering full-frame, and having the desirable 24 mm-e. The value of the 18-70 mm was whacked by the 16-85 mm VR, with its wider angle of view (24 mm-e) and stabilisation. I donít think the 24-85 mm VR will suffer that kind of collapse in the foreseeable future; but like binary visions, nor do I think it will significantly increase in price on the used market.

The optical design of the 24-85 mm VR is very similar to that of the 24-120 mm VR, so it strikes me as good value at American prices. Unfortunately in Europe the used prices are nowhere near as low, perhaps because fewer people bought D600 kits here. Used prices for this lens are 80 % of new prices here, which makes no sense at all unless new supply is constrained Ė which it isnít.

That presents an opportunity, perhaps, if youíre willing and able to sell your lens in Europe.

I don't agree that they're different scenarios because of VR or full frame coverage. At the time of the 18-70mm's release, virtually nothing had VR except telephotos, and full frame DSLRs weren't in wirespread release. Heck, the 5D, which was the first full frame to bring that sensor size to a consumer body, wasn't even released until a year after the 18-70mm came out.

The value of the 18-70 was down long before the 16-85 came on the market, with the latter simply worsening it. It suffered from the same fate as most kit lenses: many/most people buy a body with a kit lens, and enough eventually outgrow the lens, either regressing to super-zooms for many consumers, or to more expensive gear for the enthusiasts - leaving a large number of used lenses around. It's just that these more expensive kit lenses have further to fall than their 18-55mm counterparts.

There is also a rebate on that lens now. I doubt the value will ever go up.

I will be putting the 24-85mm NON VR through its' paces in Yosemite next weekend. Both versions of the lenses are supposed to be really good. I believe the VR is more or less the same optically.

As for price, I think $300-$350 is the going rate for these. There are A TON of these and I suspect that Nikon will run another D600 kit lens deal for $2000 sooner than later. The sellers of these lenses will need to price aggressively if they want to sell - which is good for buyers

I bet the used price of used 24-85vr will go up probably the end of 2013, and may be around $400-450 because the rebate ends and there are no more resales from D600 kit. Price goes up when supply goes down.

Having shot with one when they first came out with "the kit" I thought it was overpriced for what it was.
The $300-$350 used range is probably what it's REALLY worth. That's good news for those that can use
one, and additional (drive off the lot) depreciation for most who bought the combo. Nothing new there.
