The man was doing a job that permitted him to look up at us (a factory manager, my Japanese host, my lady friend and me).
The lady painting the plate was not.
I like both examples of people reacting to me taking their photo.

PS When Japanese take pictures of friends and family, they sometimes ask them to say "cheesah." Cracked me up every time I heard it.
PPS I never used the term in ANY language  .
