p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · dust inside lens ..

Ok, so I just got back from picking up a nice Nikon AF-S 24-85mm NON-VR lens for like $210. Lens is in great shape, no marks on the glass, no oil on blades, etc etc. Came with hood and caps.

Anyways, there is dust in the lens, just below the front element (or whatever). I haven't had a zoom (external extended zoom if that makes sense) in years, and realized that dust is probably not uncommon on these lenses - especially on a non sealed lens.

I am NOT going to take this lens apart. I did that last week, and I ended up with a Samyang 14mm II lens .. err.. maybe I will take this one apart..
Seriously though, should I get this taken care of? I took test pictures, and it is sharp and nothing shows up. I bought this lens specifically for my Yosemite trip next weekend, and if I end up keeping it, I may get it cleaned (but if dust will just end up back in there...)

Only thing I am worried about is that the dust may "refract" light - ...

Here are the test images... nothing great - straight from camera

If you dont see it on pics, its fine. Front element usually isnt problem, back element is.

I have dust in back element (right on last piece of glass) in C/Y 50/1.4 and in high contrast pics it is faintly visible. Front element can be smudgy and its still not visible. Nothing to worry about, unless its deep scratches, dead insects etc.

My uneducated guess is that, when one shoots at f8+ it simply can include whatever is on back side of lens, but it should never reach front of lens.

thanks for the reply. I test shot at f/4.5 and f/13 (which last one is shot at) and at 24mm and long end, and see nothing. I emailed Jim Buchanan to see how much to clean, just in case...

Dust is a problem ONLY if you focus on it.

My 200mm f2 VR2 which I bought brand new for 4000 has dust inside. My 70-200mm f2.8VR2 which I bought brand new for 1600 has dust inside. My 85mm f1.4G which I bought brand new for 1600 has dust inside. Noticing a theme here...?

P.S Is that Starbucks in Florida by any chance??

Almost any lens will have some dust in it. It won't affect your images because it is not in focus.
