p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Bought a "mint" 200 1.8, he delivered a beater.

If you posted a wtb ad for a 200 1.8 and were offered one from a well respected photographer here on FM and Nikoncafe who described the lens as being "mint" and were provided these pictures to show it's condition would you be thrilled?

What would you do if you received said lens and it looked like this? Tons of paint chips, scrapes all over, screws missing, the knob on the hood is loose and the hood won't tighten completely. And these pics actually make it look better than it actually does. Would you be upset and want to return it?

Do you think it would be unreasonable to want to send it back and have your money fully refunded plus the cost of return shipping?

Would you be upset if you called the seller who then asked "what paint chips" when you let him know you were disappointed and thought he'd misrepresented the condition of the lens? And then to have him say he took those pictures of it when he first got the lens, like it's no big deal? And then have him abruptly say he was sick and had to puke and that he'd call you back and hang up on you only to never call you back over the next 2 days? Only to ignore 2 emails and 3 PMs here and on Nikoncafe and 2 additional phone calls from you while he simultaneously logged onto Nikoncafe and posting several times throughout the day?

I've talked to him through email the last couple of days and I've gotten nowhere. He only respnded after i filed a dispute with paypal. He keeps asking me what my F'ing problem is and telling me I'm complaining about $hit and I should be glad he sold me the greatest lens Canon has ever made and I should just go shoot with it.

Needless to say I am less than thrilled with the outcome of this transaction and I have disputed the transaction through paypal and will be contacting AMEX if it doesn't get resolved. What's the most disappointing part is that this is a well respected guy who for some reason has decided it's ok to tell me the lens was "mint", send me pics of a "mint" lens and then send me one that's obviously been banged around over the past year. I showed the pics of the lens to the guy he had bought it from and that seller was appalled at its condition and didn't believe it was the same lens.

I don't think it's unreasonable to want what I was promised, especially with all of the talk recently about people selling them because of a lack of the ability to get them serviced by Canon. I wanted a mint 200 and I got one that's far from mint.

What do you guys and gals think?

I'd be pissed. It's clearly not in the same condition as the lens as the original photos.

I'd mention this to Fred.

Well there is not much to discuss, this is outright fraud on his part and you clearly need to get your money back. If the price were really right I would mostly be concerned about how good the optics were but based on the photos you were expecting and probably paid the price for a premium copy. If he has only had the lens a year and it's in that condition I would be quite concerned about how much abuse it suffered causing damage you cannot see with your eyes. Definitely get your money, this individual clearly is pulling something here IMO.

if he won't work with you on returning it, here is a little tip, escalate the claim to your credit card (hopefully you used your credit card thru paypal) and he'll have to eat the 2.9% fees.

That does seem quite shady to me to advertise a "mint" item, complete with pictures representing it in such shape - then deliver an item that is not only not mint, but very well used.

I certainly don't see an issue with wanting your money back.

You got robbed, forget paypal and contact Amex right away. Paypal will waste your time and you may loose the AmEx window of opportunity to dispute. I have been in same situation here locally, and $s involved were lower so I wrote it off, but this is pretty absurd.

Anyone would be appalled & outraged. A seller like this is every buyer's worst nightmare. I hope you find a way to get your $ back...all of it...soon. I also hope we get to learn this person's identity.

Next time:

* Ask for a photo with the serial #.
* Ask for a photo of the item sitting next to some other random item or next to a piece of paper with a random word written on it.
* Check the exif of photos that you receive.

While these cannot totally eliminate the chance of fraud, it can help to reduce it.

You should get a refund because the lens was not as described or as pictured as long as it is the same lens. Only thing would be if he had two lenses and sent you the wrong one, but doesn't seem like that happend. It would be nice if the seller would comment and shed some light on the situation.

On the slim chance that it was shipped via USPS or any correspodence went via US snail mail, I'd file form 8165 (mail fraud) against the guy who dumped this on you and see if the prospect of federal prison changes his tune. I've used said form a few times, 100% success rate, federal postal inspectors take a very dim view of fraud and will investigate thoroughly. Fred needs to ban this guy, too.
