p.1 #1 · D7000 with Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO HSM

Is anyone using this combination ? I'm looking to upgrade to this lens from my tamron 200-500, and since the nikon 500mm is out of my price range this may be the next best thing. My tamron just doesn't seem to be as sharp and softer on my d7000 then it was on my d90 .I shoot eagle ,other birds and wildlife ..Information on this lens seems to be scarce ,any information will be appreciated.
Thanks

How much do these go for? There's none on eBay but they sell new for $5000, which would be the same price for a used 500 f/4 AF-S

You may want look at the AF-S 300 f4 w/TC-17E II for eagles & wildlife
In good light it's amazing for the $1400 I have in 'em. Another option,
would of course be the 300 f2.8 VR with same TC...but a lot more $$

I'll look around for D7K grab with this combo (AF-S 300 f4 w/TC-17E II)
but this one from my D800 should hold ya BTW, welcome to FM

One thing to consider - and I do love my 300mm + 1.7x combo - is that the teleconverter combo that the 'monkey mentions pretty much maxes you out at ~500mm. I'm not very pleased with the results of the 2x converter on it, so I don't consider that a viable option.

If you can swing the 500mm, you'd have the option of slapping a 1.4x or 1.7x converter on there for an even longer lens.

If the "other birds" you shoot include songbirds... well, we always know you can never have enough reach for songbirds.

The 300 + teleconverter is definitely a cheaper option, though, and is really optically pretty darn good for the money.

Ya, but on the D7K cropper...it's a pretty substantial 750mm FOV and a joy to handhold too.
Just tryin' to save the kid some money.

I would get a 120-300/2.8 OS in your situation and use it with a TC, on and off. The price is similar but you get OS and the added versatility of the zoom (like you had with the 200-500, its other shortcomes notwithstanding).

I used the D7000/Sigma 500mm combo for the last year. Just upgraded to a D600 and like the results much better. The 500mm stays on my body 95% of the time. Had to push the fine tune back +20. One of these days I'll send it in for a calibration.

This set is mostly shot with this combo http://www.flickr.com/photos/jrmorrismt/sets/72157626183064358/
