NR seems to think we might see the D7100 released next week. I'm starting to think the D400 will never happen, I guess time will tell:

Real shame, unless Nikon decides to basically can the D400 line and make D7100 the new D400... one can hope... I somehow expect not.

I can see myself having a "D7100" as a primary camera if specs are good, and a D5200 for a travel & back up body. I don't see myself spending the money on a Nikon FX camera, and have instead been transitioning to Leica RF system.

Canon is suppose to release a 70D this spring, so i can see a D7100 coming soon.

Plus, rumor is a 7D mkII is due in the fall. So i'm hoping for a D400 in the fall also.

If the Canon update to their 7D comes out before a Nikon "d400", I could well switch.

Since I have a major love affair with my D7000, I am pretty excited to see what the D7100 has to offer. I personally prefer the D7000/D600 body size/weight, layout and controls to the D200/D300/D700 family. And I have absolute faith that the D7000 is plenty sturdy enough to withstand any abuse that I will ever subject it to. My wish list for the D7100 is for it to have a bigger buffer, higher FPS (8 fps), at least 30p video, iris control in LV, improved low light performance and an improved version of the 51 pt. autofocus system. I would be perfectly happy with 16mp but I expect it to be 24mp. 24mp is actually a small negative to me. Unless something really revolutionary happens, the Canon offerings don't interest me. I do think dynamic range, low light performance and color depth are important and Canon just can't seem to match Nikon in those areas at this time. I would never consider trading my D7000 for a 7D.

I am confused here, probably doesn't help that I have never used any of these cameras (D300, D7K, 7D, etc etc), but what can the D300 do that the D7000 cannot?

I understand that obviously frame rate and AF are big to quite a few people - especially shooting sports, BIF, etc, but other than those two things, why would you switch to Canon?

There are several things important to me that cameras such as D300 & 7D offer that the D7000 does not. These are things that do make a difference for me. First is the 10-pin socket. I hook up one of my CyberSync triggers to fire the camera in tandem with another camera. That gives me two angles at once. The second is the higher flash sync, which can help freeze motion better if there's ambient light present, or makes it easier for me to overpower the sun. Third is the higher FPS, fourth is much better AF. With something like an updated 7D or D300 I have a camera that can outperform a much more expensive D800, and be on a par with a much heavier one such as D4.

Kent, I am a little confused on some of your issues, as well. For one, I doubt that the 7D has a "much better AF" than the D7000. I find the D7000 to be pretty amazing in AF performance even in very poor lighting. Actually, I doubt that the 7D AF will even match the D7000. As for the flash sync speed, is the 7D flash sync speed higher than the D7000's 1/250? FWIW, and just for my own knowledge, would it be possible to fire 2 Nikon's at the same time by using the optional remote? And finally, do you really think an updated D300 or 7D will outperform a D800 and be on a par with the D4? That sure would be an amazing crop body camera.

Oh jeez....why do people make comments like this? It's just hyperbole and attention grabbing.......who cares if you are going to switch?

No, quite wrong. I've become increasingly unhappy with Nikon USA's policies in particular lately (e.g. having to send camera in for very expensive repairs for minor issues.) Nikon's customer service seems to be on a sucky trend for at least the past two years. I'm unhappy with Nikon's not updating lenses I use or would use if they did what I want--e.g. an 80-400mm with AFS focus or a 300m f4 with VR. Nikon just hasn't been delivering cameras & lenses I want. I had to buy a tokina to get a good ultra wide f2.8. The one thing Nkon got right was the SB-900 flash, and their iTTL metering. However, I mostly shoot big flash set ups (10,000ws power) in manual mode anyway. I select camera gear based on how it will work for what I do, not what it says on the label. This is something I've been thinking about for the past year. If I do buy another Nikon, I just might buy it from Winnipeg, Canada. Screw Nikon USA.

I'm assuming an updated Canon 7D (if it appears) will have better AF than a d7000. The Nikon remote control is pretty wimpy and doesn't have any range to it. I can set my D300 on the other side of a canyon or valley with a CyberSync trigger on it, and when I fire my D5100 with CyberSync transmitter, the D300 will immediately fire from up to 200 yards away. This is one reason I have kept the D300. Cameras such as the D7000 & D600 are OK for weekend shooters, but when you start to do some "fancy" stuff they just weren't designed for it. And yes, for some things (such as wildlife and shooting at night) a "D400" would perform just as well as a D4 and likely outperform the slower D800. When you're shooting at ISO 800, no one will tell the difference and the camera should be half to one fourth the cost for the same performance.

Then stop being a martyr and switch. Whine, whine, whine. Go buy a Canon or something else. Just stop threatening to switch. Do it or shut up.....jeez.

If Canon (or whoever) comes out with something that suits me best, I will certainly switch. Until then, I will keep using my Leicas and Nikon or two. As for whining, maybe you just want to whine about someone who unlike yourself isn't a fanboy.

So where is the D7100? I'll buy one if there is no D400, but I'd much rather have a better body. I'm also a bit concerned that Nikon improves the AF to match the tighter pixel pitch.

Fanboy? Hardly. I've been using Nikon equipment since 1975. I use what works for me.

I know for a fact that it is coming out as I have just bought a D7000 this week. Generally, just after I buy a camera the new model comes out. Same thing happen with the D700, D800 came out with in a month. Such is life.

The early adopters get to stomp on all the bugs, too. The D7000 and D700 were well past any bugs when you bought them. My D700 came to me a couple years ago and served me well for a year or so before the D800 came out.

I bought my D800 for 600 bucks off list by going refurbished. That and the 1 year warranty sold me on the D800. The blizzard of returns saved me some serious bucks AND my camera will be current for at least another year or so.

That's pretty much my strategy too. Nikon's track record on new models hasn't been all that great lately, and their service seems to be declining. I like to wait a few months to see what shakes out, and to see if I can snag a lower price somewhere. It always happens sooner or later. With digital photography, patience is well rewarded.
