Yes, thanks, plastic.

If that's the contrast wide open, I hope it doesn't pick up too much stopped down.

Is this lens worth buying a D800 for? Best 50-55mm ever?

Depends. An M9 + Summilux might be in the same price category (or even cheaper) as the D800 + 55/1.4 and still offer "sufficient" IQ.

D800 ($2700) + 55/1.4 ($4000) = more than the rest of my equipment combined and doubled.......I do wish I could the combo though or just the lens will do.

I really wish they showed exactly what the comparison lens model was. I wonder if the current 1.2 and 1.4's are really as bad as their examples?

I think the 'bad lens' comparison is actually quite good, all things considered. Or at least pretty typical of fast 50mm wide open performance.

jotdeh: ME (M9) or M240 & 50 Lux ASPH is in the $9500-11000 range. Isn't this lens supposed to be around $3000+?

The sample crops they showed do look extremely impressive if that's wide open. The 50 Lux ASPH will not give you that high a level of wide open edge/corner performance. The more apt comparison will be against the new Leica 50/2 APO. I'm sure someone eventually will put the two lenses on the new M body for a direct comparison.

The question for me at least is whether the size and weight are worthwhile tradeoffs for the apparently outstanding technical performance.

Particularly awesome is the lack of defocus color fringing.

The comparison lens isn't too far from a Planer 1.4/50 in character.

My guess is $3500. Other than Leica, other manufacture always price it make it barely/magically happen to slip it in your bag
I feel the first comparison should not be WO, though that unknown/suck regular lens look like is.

Coma and Longitudinal Chromatic Aberration are for suckers, apparently!

I wonder if the other lens is their own 50/1.4?

Yes, I believe that he said it was an older Contax of some kind, from the '50s, maybe from the Contarex camera. That would kinda make sense, since that was the best they could make in those days.

The price is expected to be around 3000 Euro/$4000.

That is what he had in his hand, but I didn't get the impression that it was the source of the 'inferior' sample.

It's a Contarex lens, probobly the 55.

The Contax 50mm f1.4 is much smaller than that Contarex. Stopped down, even just to f2, I imagine there wouldn't be much difference in IQ between the lenses. Is it worth 3K+ and the huge size for just f1.4 performance?

I won't sell my ZF.2 50/1.4 though, even if I buy this behemoth. I love its aberrations.

Performance looks awesome, but after carrying such light equipment the past two years, I don't think I could force myself to lug around a 1.2 kg normal lens, no matter how good. I mean, it's almost the weight of a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom. Heck, this makes the Sigma 50/1.4, which is huge, look tiny.

Though, for those who want the best no matter what, it looks truly awesome.

Hm, is the Contax so much better than the Z* 50 1.4?
The Makro-Planar 50 is significantly (IMO) better wide open at f/2 than the ZF 50 1.4 at f/2. Only talking about contrast in the image centre. Now bring in the whole frame and the color correction....

A better match for f/2 performance would be the new APO-summicron Leica flagship.
