p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zeiss 35mm f2 VS Sigma 35mm f/1.4? (3D effect)

Hello guys,

anyone here did a comparo between zeiss 35mm f2 vs the new sigma 35mm? in terms of 3D rendering.

By the way does zeiss 35mm needs distance in order to get sharp at f2? ( like the 50mm planar ).

thanks

The Zeiss 35/2 is extremely sharp wide open at any focusing distance. I would expect the 35/2 to have more pop compared to the Sigma but I've never done any tests. Here's a sample of the pop at f2 and a 100% crop of the head. Exported out of lightroom with default sharpening. I've never tried the Sigma but it probably has similar sharpness at f2 and maybe smoother bokeh?

Me too interested in how sigma will pop and how sigma renders bokeh

nibutto, here are two series of photographs produced using the Nikon D800 and Sigma 35/1.4 showing bokeh for near-in subjects; the first (cork-screw) was focussed very near minimum focus distance, f/1.4 through f/16.

Click on image to view the entire album or click here. I'll add more samples to this album in the future.

One nice thing about the Sigma 35/1.4 is that its minimum focus distance is only ~30cm from the focal plane, so not all that far in front of the lens hood.

For the second series I left the camera and objects in place but refocussed instead on the decanter in the background, again through the full range of apertures. I wanted to show the out of focus areas in front of the plane of focus, again with a near subject.

I'll see if I can find a deer or moose roaming around Vancouver to address the other example provided up-thread. A large dog may have to do.

Michael, I am sure one of these creatures can hit your car once you cross to West Van area.

Anyhow, I have Zeiss 2/35 in F mount so please PM me if you ever feel like getting together for test shots around False Creek/ Yaletown.

Here are a few shots taken very recently with the Sigma 35, and trying to show the 3-D effect. It definitely has it...might not be as strong as the Zeiss look...but it's still very good.

WB is wacked on this one...sorry! Overhead fluorescent and flash combined!

Probably one or two metres like michael mentioned. The deers in Nara are very friendly, some of em even bow to you to get a deer cookie. I have a video of it somewhere

I have both lenses. But I'm abroad so I can't post any samples or comparison (3D) from them until I'm back in Sweden.
Yes the Zeiss 35/2 is sharp wide open. But the Sigma is sharper at f/2 than the Zeiss. The Sigma is extremely sharp already wide open f/1,4.
And the Sigma has at least as much pop as the Zeiss. IMO it has a bit more.
I would recommend people that can (most is for subscribers) to look at diglloyds comparisons with many pics at different apertures. From Sigma, Zeiss, Nikon & Canon 35mm lenses

Lloyd didn't compare with Zeiss 35/2 yet, only with the less sharp 35/1.4.

Nobody wrote it was the 35/2 either. Overall the Zeiss f/1,4 is a nicer lens IMO than the f/2 anyway. But if it's only sharpness you are after or comparing here. Then the Sigma is sharper than both the Zeiss f/1,4 and f/2 lenses. And Canon/Nikon f/1,4 lenses also.......

Thats awesome kudos to Sigma. I agree I prefer the 35/1.4 over the 35/2 (although its a matter of taste), the 1.4 has a more subtle rendering which I find pleasing. I much prefer compact lens though which is why I ended up with the 35/2

Very nice Gregg. It also shows some of the strong performance and sharpness the lens has wide open

I really love this lens! I just wish I could go out and actually take other pics besides my kids!!! Not that I don't like taking their pics, but with two boys, and a wife that works every other weekend, my time for "other" are very few and far between!!!
I have a shot of Giovanni, my youngest, up close at f2.5 that absolutely blows me away!!! You can see the texture of his skin, it's so sharp!!
