p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zuiko 50/1.8 vs Pentax M 50/1.7

I am currently in the process of putting together a lens set for traveling. Criteria are:
- adaptable to full frame EF
- lightweight
- small
- cheap and easily replaceable in case they get damaged

As a 50mm, I am considering the most recent version of the 1.8 Zuiko or the Pentax SMC-M 1.7.
I guess I can't go wrong with either of them, but still I wonder whether anyone here has used both of them, preferably side-by-side. Also, maybe someone has other suggestions - but cheap is a criteria, so shelling out multiple times as much for a Contax or Summicron is not an option, sorry

I payed 25 dollars for both of my MiJ zuiko 50/1.8 lenses.

I realize it's a fair bit bigger but cheap, relatively small still and absolutely fantastic is the 50/3.5 zuiko which is by far my most used OM lens.

I can compare the Oly 50/1.8 to SMC Pentax-A 50/1.7 and -A 50/2. I just received the Oly this week, and so I dont know it very well, yet.

In my experience with SMC Pentax, the 50mm -A lenses are all slightly better than their -M counterparts. I've owned -A and -M versions of 50/1.4, 50/1.7, and 50/2. Now, I only have -A versions. The -A lenses are better for both IQ and coatings, with the -A having better resolution, higher contrast, and better flare resistance.

The weather doesn`t show any good vis for Halifax over the next six days, except for maybe (hopefully) a few hours on Friday.

The Oly 50/1.8 and SMC Pentax-A 50/2 are both cheap as a handful of good dirt - about $25 to $35, befoe shipping and etc. The -A 50/1.7 goes for three or four handfuls of good dirt.

That is interesting, considering that for the 1.7 and 2.0 lenses, the M and A are said to have the same optical construction. Putting sample variation aside, it sounds like the newer coating does seem to have an impact.

A Zuiko to A1.7 (and maybe A2.0, although it does not seem to be as well regarded as the 1.7) would be great if you can manage.
Can you tell which version of the Zuiko it is? Silvernose, "Japan" on the front ring, "Made in Japan" on the front ring or none of all?

It seems to be a consistent difference. Some online test results from PDML members are linked through Boz Dimitrov's K-mount site, http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/

It's one of the most modern versions, labelled "Zuiko MC".

Here's a quick comparison of the Zuiko and Pentax-A 50/1.7, look ing at my back yard this morning. Canon 1DX, handheld, ISO 400, f/5.6. First image is Oly and second image is Pentax. I'm a bit disappointed, both have low contrast and poor detail....

As I said earlier, I probbaly won't have decent visibility until the end of the week.

Pentax 50/1.7 has punchier colours, better contrast and slightly better sharpness compared to Oly 50/1.8,but to adapt it to EF you need to do leverectomy, whereas Oly requires adapter only.

Did you consider Rollei HFT Planar 50/1.8 in the QBM mount? It is optically better that these two, being Rollei's equivalent of 50/1.7 T* Planar C/Y and costs only about 60-70 Euro.It can be easily adapted to EOS with just Rollei-EF adapter.

Jim, I'm interested to hear more on your opinion of the A 50/2.0. This lens is so cheap, and so small, I've been looking at getting one.

Under my torture tests i found that the Zuiko beats the SMC M's & A'a I have in coma and flare resistance. (Night shots with bright lights, shooting towards the sun).

Thanks jcolwell, the Pentax does indeed look punchier and more contrasty here.

Never really bothered with QBM lenses so far. Last thing I heard was that there are severe infinity and mirror clearance problems on EOS with most of them. Is that still the case? Also, does anyone know where to find the specs of the 2 versions of the Planar? They look quite a bit heftier than the Zuiko or Pentax.

There may be some problems with infinity/mirror hanging with 5D2,depending on camera/adapter/lens combination.Trying before purchase is recommended.

Rollei is a little bit bigger and heavier than both 50/1.8 Zuiko and 50/1.7 Pentax M but not by much.

Optical construction of Rollei 50/1.8 Planar and C/Y Planar 50/1.7 is the same i.e. 7/6.Rollei version though has the first four lenses flatter, compared to the C/Y.

IQ wise C/Y Planar is slightly better,(less CA and hazing wo and a tad more of 3D look overall),but these differences are not significant.Rollei colours also seem to be a tiny bit overcooked in low contrast situations.HFT coating is supposed to be not as good as the T* coating ,as a result of Rollei's attempt to reduce manufacturing costs, but it's very, very close.C/Y built seems more solid somehow.

Here are two from my 50/1.7 mounted on my E-PM1 with a Fotodiox adapter. First one at f/2.8 and second one at f/1.7. I am still getting use to MF with the adapter so the 1st one might be off target a bit.

I just posted an infinity focus comparison of the Oly 50/1.8, SMC Pentax-A 50/1.7 and -A 50/2. The Oly looks very good.

Chris, based on what I've seen, I'd get the Oly. Mine cost $38.50 on eBay, plus about $6 for shipping.

I have an Oly 50/1.8 arriving this weekend or the beginning of next week. I will have to do some test between the two.

I got my AUTO-S Zuiko 50/1.7 MIJ lens today. I am not sure what brand the adapter is but it says LITOOC on the side. All I know is that it works like it's suppose to! Anyways...it's raining pretty good here so I can't do much outside. The focusing ring is much stiffer than my 50/1.7 but that's probably from lack of use. My 50/1.7 was my father-in-law's and it got ALOT of use on his K1000. I took a few sample shots on my E-PM1 wide open. From my limited testing I have found the Oly to be sharper wide open and much easier to nail the focus using focus assist with the E-PM1 (perhaps it's me?) The one thing I REALLY like about the Oly is the minimum focus distance. With the 50/1.7 I had to get quite a bit further away. I still plan on doing some tests once the weather clears and I can find some appropriate subject matter. Note: I THINK I am seeing a bit of PF when shooting wide open but I am not sure. I will post the sample later with no processing.

I paid $30 for mine, but it looks brand new. It's nice to have a 50 that can focus close.
