Another shot from Utah from a few weeks ago, this time as I took in the sunset from the Green River Overlook with Craig Carr. This is just another of the really cool compositions that Craig lead me to. There were no clouds, so I focused on using the sun to add interest to the sky.

Thanks Craig! Yeah, it was crazy how fast the sun set once it got close to the horizon. I am really liking that spot. Next month when I am back there I for sure want to shoot there again.

nice catch Jim,
love the foreground light, but to be honest the sky looks awefully hdr`d.

Nice job controlling the sunburst. I like the detail in the rock and it stands out compared to the background, even if I wish the background was brighter-it probably wouldn't help the image.

Fantastic shot. When I was there last, ran into pretty lousy weather - read no sun.

yep! it has the qualities of an HDR image. even though i know Jim would never HDR in the 'photomatix' sense it still seems to be pushed in RAW to that end.

cool shot though. the comp of the sun star bursting between the two foreground elements is very nice. watch that HDR look....

Hardly HDR.

I was standing there and as the last rays were hitting the sandstone and colored the sky, it became very intense for that last minute or 30 seconds before it faded. I turned to Jim and said "That's it." And it was suddenly dull and gray. And if you have spent a lot of time in Utah outdoors at dawn and dusk you start realizing it is what it is. Intense reds and oranges, brilliant skies... But, unlike the ocean, there is no lingering color... It's just turned off.

I do know Jim used reverse graduated neutral density filter, but that was it.

Sweet catch of the light and a wonderful comp, Jim.
Not sure if it's what the others are talking about, but the only thing I see is a wee bit of darkening right around the sun. If you could soften just those reds (maybe lightness slider in hue/sat to the right a little?), I think you got yourself a winner!
Awesome light on the fg rock!!

Hey SImon, thanks so much, yeah the foreground light was sweet. I don't quite get the sky looking HDR though... ofcourse I don't use HDR so not sure what it is about the sky that looks HDR...

Thanks so much. That sun star was a bit of a pain to clean up, but it turned out pretty good I think. As to the background, I thought about brightening it up a little bit too, but the I wanted to keep the balance of light as realistic as possible, because without selecting the background with a layer mask, brightening the whole shot made the foreground too bright.

Jim, this is beautiful, Great light on the forground. Really like the intrest thruout the image. Could not have picked a better local for this capture.
