p.1 #1 · Drummer in action (First try with Sigma 35mm f/1.4)

Hi guys,

My drummer asked if I could shoot some shots of him during rehearsal for his sponsors to use, I was pretty happy with how these came out since we rehearse in a cramped, dark basement and I was also trying to play as much as possible! I mainly used a borrowed Sigma 35/1.4 which performed amazingly even wide-open. My 50/1.2L also came out for a while. All are shot with available light.

There's a full (small) set here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/-nolly-/sets/72157632734757185/, but these are probably my favourites:

Any comments welcome!

I'd like to see the images with more contrast. What I'd expect to be black is gray... unless that processing is your intention. #1 is the best shot in my opinion. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the comment Rob, the processing is indeed intentional - best viewed against a light background but is intended to give a faded yet contrasty look.

Love the processing, love the light. Wow what a sweet lens, must try vs my 35L!

I'd be interested to hear any other comments. Do you guys prefer the motion blur in these over the more frozen captures I first posted?

I like frozen over motion blur.

And I like the motion over the frozen, so there! Haha.

The motion just conveys the drummer drumin' more to me, depends on the look your going for I guess.

Love the processing and I think I am kinda digging the motion shots. Nice work.

I like the motion shots best too. However the light on his face in the first shot is nice.

When I saw the first shots, I wondered why you had posed him sitting still. Yes, the motion blur is a big improvement. Drumming is kinetic, and doesn't make a lot of sense at high shutter speeds.

Really dig the processing here, although I do like the last color one. The first motion photo is awesome! My only nitpick for that one and the first few is the white behind him (easy to crop out, but honestly not that distracting).

Post a color-motion photo? (:

Great, thanks for the input guys! (even if it's a little conflicting haha)

As for the white lamp in the background, I should point out that these really are a result of me trying to take photos in between playing rather than actually setting up for a photoshoot. Unfortunately that lamp also emitted some of the most yellow light I've ever seen, hence the B&W edits for almost all shots!
