p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Deploy a 24-70mm f2.8 on a D7000?

Do you use a 24-70 f2.8 on a crop body camera?

I love my D7000, I expect to use it for 2+ years. Currently I have the 50mm f1.8AF lens on the camera.

My only other AF lens is a 18-70 lens left over from my D70s. I also have and use several AIs primes, 20mm, 55mm micro, 105 f1.8.

I have never owned a VR lens. Right now, for me, not owning a VR is like not owning an automatic transmission car, I do not know what I am missing, but, the car still goes.

I expect the replacement for the D7000 will be a FX, as all but one of my lenses work with FX.

That said, I would like to buy a new lens for the D7000. I am considering the 24-70mm f2.8. I know it is a FX. If I purchase it I will be paying in excess weight and size without all the benefits of FX while I use it on the D7000.

My reason for considering it as a first choice as my next lens is that the focal length seems to cover 80-90% of what I shoot with the D7000, focal length wise.

Plus everybody seems to really like the results of that particular lens

I do not want to buy a DX equivalent today, only to have to replace it when the FX body is purchased in a couple years, especially considering the DX eq lens would only be a few hundred dollars less.

So my questions are;

For my circumstances is a 24-70mm f2.8 lens a good or bad decision?

If not that lens then what?

(P.S. - I have looked at the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G and could not bring myself to buy that particular lens)

Please help!!

it'll work, but you'd probably be better off with the 17-55, its also cheaper. Unless you plan on going FX one day.

I did much the same prepping for my transition to FX. I bought the 24-70 and used it on my old D300 for over a year before the D800 came out. Do it, great lens!

Why not, especially given the fact that you say you want to go FX in the near future and that it covers 80-90% of your FL needs?

IMO, the 24-70 is a fine piece of glass, on both DX and FX. If you can afford it and don't care about the cost, size and weight, then using it on DX shouldn't be an issue.

I personally think the 18-55 is a fine lens. Really.

That said I do like the 24-70, but I won't buy one. I won't buy one because like you I find that my most used focal lengths are in that range. I personally want VR. I know Nikon is going to make a VR version at some point and wash away my investment.

I would rather buy the new Tamron, used, for cheaper. Now. With VC.

My Tamron 28-75 is my favorite lens on my D300s. If you're planning to go FX, I think it would be a good move. Rent one or pick up a Tammy like mine for cheap (~$300) and see what you think.

24-70 is a bit of an odd focal length on DX. It's like a time travel back to the 1980s when we had 35-70 or 35-105 lenses that were often not wide enough. It also does not have VR. However, if you do buy the 24-70/2.8 it might inspire you buy an FX body sooner.

I used my 24-70 with my d90, and now with my d7000 and d700. Works great.

I loved the 24-70 on a DX crop body... gets to be a 35-105 f2.8. Which fit my style quite nicely.

I have the 24-70 but I wouldn't recommend it for DX - it's not wide enough. I would suggest a Tamron or Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. I know you don't want a DX lens, but you won't lose a lot of money on that deal and you'll have a better focal range for much less money and weight. My $0.02 at least...

^^ Agreed.

For me the 24-70 was just not wide enough. I would rather opt for the 17-55 2.8 for DX.

Had both the 17-55 DX f/2.8 and 24-70 G f/2.8 lenses deployed on my D7000. Great experiences with both lenses. The D7000 loves that 17-55 glass, but I knew I was headed into FX country and made the switch to the 24-70 ahead of time. Worked great on the D7000. Would not have switched if I was going to stay with DX format, though.

I've started using the Nikon 24-70 on my D7k body. It's great. One day I'll get the FX body, though.

I use it on my D7000 and I'm very happy with it. The only problem is that it's not wide enough on DX which occasionally drives me nuts but other than that, it's a fantastic piece of glass.

Guess it depends on what you plan on shootin'...
I love the AF-S 17-35 f2.8 on my D7K for my "south of 50" work on DX.
When I slap it on an FX body, it becomes a whole 'nother world.

If you need 2.8, the 17-55 is a better choice as a main/walkaround lens... Why buy a lens for a camera that you might own someday rather than the camera you own now?

The 24-70 wasn't my favorite on my d7k. It's not wide enough and I had issues with back focus. I tried af fine tuning but it seemed inconsistent. I always thought I had a bad copy because of all the good things I heard about that lens. I've since added a d700 to my bag and it works perfect on that body, sharp and perfect focus.

I'm not really a big fan of 24mm on DX. It never feels quite wide enough to me. Same thing with my 50mm - I ended up buying a 35mm f/1.8 as well because the 50mm was just a little too constraining.

While it's always good to think about the future, you should also buy what fits your needs. You have an 18-70 - set it to 24mm and walk around with it for a day, see if that's wide enough for what you want.

Can't go wrong with either the 17-55mm or the 24-70mm.

I had them both, but did not like the overlap between the 17-55mm and a 12-24mm. They are both wicked sharp and fast. 17-55mm will be lighter.

Your ideal three lens setup IMO is a 10-24mm or 12-24mm, a 24-70mm, and a 70-300mm vr on that camera. Then you have two FX lenses and only one DX to unload in the future. Only my opinion...

I have just gone from DX to FX and as such the 17-55 2.8 to the 24-70 2.8

I would recommend that you grab a zoom and fix it at 24mm and see if you like it. For me personally 24mm (36mm) on a DX is just not wide enough for day to day use, the crop comes in handy for certain things but works against you for others.

I can't recommend the 17-55 2.8 enough, it's a truly fantastic lens. My intial plan was to up to the 24-70mm and scrape by on DX until i could afford to go full frame which i have now done. As things panned out i never needed to do it because the FF opportunity came quicker than expected.

The top Nikon lenses really hold their value, i sold mine 12 months later for the same price i paid, if you can look after it when and if you go to FX you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting your money back unless Nikon do something drastic with DX.

Your not missing anything with either of lenses not having VR, they're so dam heavy i don't think i can even make the camera vibrate.

I hope it helps.
