Does anyone know why the sensor on the 6D is slightly small. On the Canon website it says it's 35.8 X 23.9? Is this a big deal in your mind? I'm getting my first FF camera and looking at 5D II or 6D. I have the 60D now and a few lenses. Any thoughts?

It shouldn't be. People feel the 6D IQ and ISO performance is slightly better than the 5DMkIII. Even if that's not true...I'd say the 6D is pretty good...I wouldn't care about the sensor size.

864mm^2 vs 855.62mm^2, not a whole lot of difference to me. I guess if you can't handle the 1.0097 crop factor.

I think 1.0097 crop factor is a true deal breaker in acquiring a 6d

the SD slot and fastest shutter speed of 1/4000 is c00l...but that SMALLER sensor......that just ruins it for me....

The 6D has nanocrop. It's the new format between 1.3 APS-H (former 1D series) and oversize full frame (5DmkIII and 1Dx). The nanocrop of the 6D forces you to zoom with your feet for just less than half your big toe in your shoe. It's a good exercise. So the designers had your health in mind when designing this edgeless pixel sensor. Marketing is to blame for this new cripple policy, but their reasoning was that a 1% pixel discount is probably the better solution and a good differentiator from the "real full frame" bodies like the oversize full frame bodies like the 1Dx and the 5DmkIII. The nanocrop also crops out the pixels from images that usually hit the frame or matte around the picture. Future green Canon printers will support the new nanocrop format to save ink and save the world. Another fact is Nikon and Sony don't have the new format of nanocrop full frames yet. The nanocrop format offers third party developers to bring new products. Expect Metabones to bring a new speedbooster to support the new nanocrop format which will enhance the opening speed of any EF lens by 0.097%. Also a new Adobe Lightroom Flash edition will convert the nanocrop format faster. An important implication for practical use of the nanocrop bodies is that photographers should keep in mind that the rule of thumb for the shutter speed (1/focal length sec) should be counting on 0.097% extra reduction in shutter speed, or use the tripod. By the end of 2013 most Canon service centers will have the new sensor cleaning equipment with smaller pads. Some service centers even will start hiring cleaning gnomes to clean the nano crop sensors.

Perhaps for a slight reduction in production costs.

That may be very well be true in mass production, what is ~1% could be a lot of money to Canon.

Boy am I glad I got the 5D3 at a mere $3K so I didn't give Canon any surplus profit. I wouldn't want them to get away with anything!

I believe after all these replies, you understand that it doesn't matter, right? If there was something stopping us from getting the 6D, it would hardly be because of it's <1% crop factor.

Yup I got it.
It was just interesting to me why they would go through the trouble of making a new format.

Sensor sizes...direct from Canon's USA website and DPReview

5Dc - 35.8 x 23.9 mm; same as 6D...Canon lied they're not really FF
5D2 - 36.0mm x 24.0mm...the real FF body
5D3 - Approx. 36 mm x 24mm...might be FF

They're within 'Acceptable' FF tolerances

That could be the reason the 5Dc and 6D images look sharper on the 2 pixel edges...

Thanks for all the input.

What would you get the 6D or 5D II?

6D, 5DII is old hat at this point. 6D FEELS like a modern camera, 5DII feels dated, and the files look dated too.

Hmm, most of the time you'd be hard pressed to tell a 5D2 file from a 6D unless pushed in an extreme manner. I like 6D output but the small controls feel like a 60D or Rebel. The 5D2 is much nicer in the hand: all metal, joystick, larger QCD, etc. Those tiny tap pads in the middle of the 6D QCD are a PITA compared to a joystick.

Uh huh.

Yes, those 5D2 files look sooooo dated. It's pretty sad how all those editors, ADs, etc have all started rejecting 5d2 images and requiring 6D images instead.

The 6D has the edge in IQ. But you'd be hard pressed to find a better value than a 5D2 @ $1200 used in EX condition.

Here in germany it is still available new at nearly same price of 6D or even higher. Good used ones are available around 1300 (€). I guess, I would not see any (big) difference in normal use. But I already saw it at ISO 3.200, 6.400, 12.800 and 25k. AF works more reliable in higher ISO conditions for sure, too.

I will sell my 5DII after the next booked shooting and purchase a 6D, no matter if it is FF or 0,2% below.

Guys, sorry i hurt your feels, or the feels of your 5DII's.
For what I shoot, which is available light, and often indoors with horrible light, the 6D is without a doubt, FAR FAR better than the 5DII.
Like Ralph pointed out, the high ISO images from the 6D are not hard to tell apart from similarly-shot 5DII stuff.
