p.1 #1 · Walk-Around Lens for Canon 7D

Hello,

I currently use a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 as my walk around lens on my Canon 7D. I am not happy with its AF speed. It also seems to have to hunt for focus in low light at times. I bought this lens about 6 years ago. I would like to hear from other 7D (or similar ASC camera users) if any of the other three choices would be noticeably better.

Here is some more background:
If I change lenses, I would want to keep the price at $1,100 or less.
I am OK with a heavy lens if the IQ and performance is noticeably better
I would probably sell the Tamron to partially pay for the new lens
I would probably by a LNIB 28-105, since these come up for sale fairly often
I would likely purchase a used 24-70 as well

It's a 24-105, not 28, so you get a few more mm of width. However, 24 still isn't very wide on a crop sensor camera. Have you also looked at the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS? I'm not sure how it compares to the Tamron. I like the range, though, for a walkabout lens on a crop camera. I have the Canon for my 50D. As far as I'm concerned it's an "L" lens of the EF-S variety. Very sharp and solidly built. It's $1050 on Amazon right now, but you can pick one up in the Buy & Sell forum on here for around $700.

For years I used the Canon 28-135mm lens as my walkabout. It had OK reach for things other than birds, but it was missing a lot of width. I'm happier now with 17mm on the wide end.

If your budget is $1000 then look no further than the canon 17-55 2.8 IS, if you are willing to sacrifice some speed for a little wider and longer you can save some cash with a 15-85. Both of those lenses would be my choice over any of the ones you have listed in your poll.

17-55 f2.8 IS or 15-85 IS depending on whether you value faster aperture or wider range. Don't even consider anything else in Canons range for walkabout on crop. Both are up there with their equivalent L lenses in IQ but have a much more useful range.

I agree with the Canon 17-55 if it is in your price range. Hunting for focus in low light is an unfortunate issue with the Tamrons, at least in my experience. I have owned both the 17-50 and the 28-75 and both had the same issue. Like the quality and the 17-50 range is better for crop but if the focus is an issue then go with the Canon.

Definetly 17-55/2.8 IS before any you listed. Of the ones you listed, I would go with the 24-105/f.0 LIS

I have a Tamron 17-50 non-OS and it's an exceptional lens.

If you can get a good one or use the good Tamron warranty to get any issues sorted they are great

Another vote for the 17-55 .

I have a 24-105L as well , which I always found to be great and was my default walkie lens . I never seemed to need wider (I have a 12-24 which hardly ever gets used and when it does its at 12mm) and I also seemed to use the 105 end an awful lot.
So the thought of 'only' having 55mm scared me . I wasn't always in a position to take the big heavy 80-200L.
But after a fair bit of persuading to get a 17-55 I caved in . And boy I'm glad I did , its a superb lens. Image quality is far better than the 24-105L and I don't seem to miss the longer end (I guess a bit like primes do its taught me to move around and find a better shot rather than to just stand and zoom) .

As Reno says . It's the reason he still has a crop body .

The AF speed of both the 17-55 2.8 IS USM and 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS USM are smokin' fast and IQ are close. I didn't care much for the 24-105 on my 7D as it isn't wide enough for general use. If you need F2.8, get the 17-55. If you need a wider zoom ratio or favor wide angle, spring for the 15-85.

In the UK the Tamron 28-75 and 17-50 (non VC) sell for a similar price, I've traded in the past so it may be something worth considering? The Tamron 17-50 is a nice lens for the money, the latest Sigma 17-50 OS is also well liked. The Canon 17-55 is top of the pile, but the differences aren't as much as you'd expect for the money. That's photography for you though!

I've used the original Tamron 17-50 2.8 on my old Xti and 40D with no issues at all. Recently bought another one (used) to use on my 7D, and it works just as well as my first one, again, with no issues. You can find em used for about $300. I paid $290 for my copy.

17-55 IS if you need f/2.8. Otherwise the 15-85mm is by far the best walk-around lens for APS-C, in my opinion. I sold my 24-105 L to get it and was extremely happy - better focal length (for me) and better image quality.

Agree in regards to the 15-85mm lens - quite fast, great zoom range, image quality is as good (if not slightly better) than my 24-105mm lens... All around an excellent walk-around lens for the 7D.
