bought a 20mm f3.5 nikkor for $100 a few weeks ago. Had to be the ebay snipe of the week, but if you keep looking, you'll find something in that price range. I got a 24 f2.8 a few years go for under $80, a bit worn, but great optics.
If you want REALLY cheap, look for old Tokina 24mm prime lenses. I had one in the 80s and it was really nice, until I dropped it. Should find one of those for under $50.
If you want cheap but great IQ, you need to consider Rokinon/Samyang 35mm or 24mm, but those really aren't "cheap" in my world view of money and its value.
Yeah, i think half the people here who have posted dont understand "cheap" lol....or dont get what he's looking for....i'd say look for either a USED (all of these are always USED) Tokina 20-35 at-x, nikon 24mm 2.8 NON D, any of the 24-XX or 28-XX cheap kit zooms available from nikon....tamron 17-35, sigma 18-35mm, there's even a sigma 28 1.8 on ebay right now for $149...also, the 35 1.8g (dx lens) covers FX pretty stinkin well i find....i use it a good amount..
There are going to be about 200 responses to this question, since there were no parameters around it. Wider than 35mm? Does 28mm cut it? 20mm? 16mm? 12mm? Does cheap mean not a 14-24mm f/2.8, or does it mean under $200? Does "best" mean sharpest, or are you shooting the night sky where coma is a big concern, or are you shooting architectural where distortion is paramount?
